A Toms River man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of another Toms River man Friday morning and is currently on the run, authorities said.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that Douglas Cobb, 51, was charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon in connection with the death of Bruce Gress, 42.

Police responded to the Wawa at Route 37 and Garfield Avenue at approximately 7:20 a.m. Friday for a report of a shooting. Officers found Gress suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

Following an extensive investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Toms River Police Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, authorities identified Cobb as the person responsible for the shooting, officials said.

Cobb has not been taken into custody and is considered a fugitive. An arrest warrant has been issued.

“Great teamwork has been exhibited by all of the respective law enforcement agencies and officers involved in this investigation,” Prosecutor Billhimer said. “Our focus now is to locate Douglas Cobb and bring him into custody.”

Cobb is also known as Douglas Green and goes by the nickname “Bootknock.” He was last seen driving a black 2016 Acura MDX with New Jersey registration T93YJL.

Authorities are asking anyone who knows Cobb to advise him to turn himself in peacefully.
