A Toms River man has been identified and arrested nearly five years after a shooting on the Garden State Parkway in South Toms River.
New Jersey State Police detectives recently identified 22-year-old Anthony Zigarelli as the suspect in the January 12, 2022 shooting, after advancements in technology led to new evidence in the case. Zigarelli was a juvenile at the time of the incident.
The incident began after a verbal altercation between the victim and an unknown male at an Exxon gas station on Commonwealth Boulevard in Manchester. The suspect followed the victim’s vehicle onto the Garden State Parkway South.
Near Exit 80, the suspect fired several rounds at the vehicle, striking a male passenger in the leg. The female driver was not injured and drove the victim to Community Medical Center for treatment. He was later transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was treated and released.
As the investigation continued over the years, detectives worked with the NJSP Cellular Analysis Team and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad, ultimately identifying Zigarelli as the suspect.
Zigarelli was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said a juvenile delinquency complaint was filed against Zigarelli on September 28. He is currently in custody on an unrelated matter.
