Today marked three years since Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced on March 11, 2020, that COVID-19 was a worldwide pandemic.
In New Jersey, the first confirmed case occurred on March 2nd and Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency on March 9th.
A day later, the first death in the state was announced and schools and universities across the state began closing and switching classes to online instruction.
In Lakewood, by March 16, several Shuls were already holding outdoor Minyanim, and by March 18th, schools were already transitioning to remote classes. In addition, a Bais Havaad was created to deal with the dozens of unique Shailos caused by the pandemic.
March 18, 2020 was the turning point for Lakewood, more and more Yeshivos announced that they will close their doors, as the day progressed.
Wedding halls began cancelling events on the same day, as multiple positive cases of the virus were confirmed for the first time.
Schools and Shuls remained mostly closed for months, with most not fully opening until Shavuos.
On March 21, Governor Murphy announced a statewide stay-at-home order, requiring that all non-essential businesses be closed indefinitely by 9 p.m. that day – an order that stayed in effect until June.
As of Friday, the state has seen 2,550,542 cumulative positive cases and 36,019 related deaths, including probable Covid-19 fatalities.
About 800 people are hospitalized statewide with Covid-19.
