Opinion: Lakewood Verizon Customers Deserve Refunds Until Service Improves

For months, Lakewood residents have voiced the same complaint: Verizon Wireless service throughout our community has become increasingly unreliable. Calls fail to connect, data speeds slow to a crawl, and in many areas, customers struggle to maintain even a basic connection.

Residents have reported these issues directly to Verizon and have raised concerns with township officials, yet there has been little meaningful communication from the company and no clear indication of when, or even if, the problems will be resolved. Even the Mayor called them out about the horrible service, to no avail.

Verizon markets itself as a premium wireless provider, and its customers pay premium prices with the expectation of receiving dependable service. When that service consistently falls below a reasonable standard for an extended period of time, customers deserve more than apologies. They deserve answers, accountability, and appropriate compensation.

If the underlying issue is that Verizon has more subscribers in the area than its network infrastructure can adequately support, then that is a business decision for which customers should not bear the financial burden. If additional towers, network upgrades, or other infrastructure improvements were needed to maintain reliable service, those investments should have kept pace with customer growth. Continuing to collect full monthly payments while many customers experience persistent service issues is difficult to justify.

Lakewood residents should begin requesting credits or refunds for the months during which they have been paying for service that has failed to meet reasonable expectations. Customers are paying for reliable wireless coverage, not repeated dropped calls, poor reception, and inconsistent data connectivity.

Verizon should also provide the community with a transparent update explaining the cause of these ongoing issues, what steps are being taken to resolve them, and a realistic timeline for restoring the level of service customers have every right to expect.

Until meaningful improvements are made, customers should not simply accept substandard service while continuing to pay full price. They deserve both reliable wireless service and fair treatment when that service falls short.

If you call the retention department they’ll issue either a 1 time credit or they might offer a monthly credit for a year

I keep hearing this story. But when I try to trace where it came from, I see dead ends. Was this possibly made up? Seems made up.

Durning Covid they put up a tower on the power company land near Whispering Pines. The residents forced them to take it down…

Verizon may not care if you have servace or not. But they likely care if you leave.

They offer service on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

So people can try out other networks to see if they have better service in their area with another network.

A neighbor of mine mentioned that they have AT&T and noticed less dead spots, and more consistent service overall compared with Verizon. Obviously this is very location-dependent.

US Mobile also offers the ability to have 2 or 3 lines with them (for an additional $7.50 – $10 each month) each on a different network. This can eliminate dead zones as you will have coverage on 2 or 3 networks instead of just 1.

It puzzles me why people still pay for Verizon. I pay a fraction of the price for Mint Mobile and I never (maybe rarely) have any issues with my service.

(and it even works with the Fig Phone!)

Switch to T-Mobile. It’s way better in town. You can get their prices for cheaper when buying a few months and/or a year upfront either through Mint Mobile or US mobile.

Yes I am advertising for them because I made the switch 7 months ago from Verizon, and now I’m worry free about this 🙂

Seriously. Lakewood resident don’t want cell towers and then complain about service? That’s like saying I want to be a long term learner but I also want to live like a billionaire.

Two things can be true at once:

  1. Verizon has no business charging full price when your primary usage is in an area known to have such poor service
  2. The NIMBY crowd is partly responsible for these problems. (Verizon is also partly responsible; they reportedly refused to do any maintenance and upgrades for a period of time after someone submitted a formal complaint to the FCC several years back, after Verizon removed 3G network access despite there still being thousands of 3G “kosher” phones still actively using the network)

File a complaint with the FCC . I did it and got a senior dept head calling me to look into my issues and investigate. I believe if the FCC receives a significant amount of complaints from the area they will pay Verizon for change.
how is AT&T in lakewood any feedback would be appreciated Thank You!

How do I file a complaint with the FCC?

I would appreciate any feedback on how AT&T is as well.

It is incumbent on the customer to make educated choices. Verizon is under no obligation to build out their network in Lakewood. They can choose to give up this market to their competitors if they wanted. If someone chooses to pay for degraded service, that’s on them for not exploring the alternatives.

Verizon removing 3G access is a nonsensical charge. Verizon was shuttering the 3G network nationwide for spectral efficiency purposes whether we liked it or not.

Even if they had left a tower or two in Lakewood still broadcasting on 3G, all 3G phones would lose service anytime they left Lakewood.

There was no way that was ever going to work. Things change and we adapt.

They need to put in new gear for 5g. that includes new antennas all over. Is lakewood ready to allow for this? All the other suppliers are going to have the same problems in the near future as well. 3G is almost not usable in the real world.

People love to complain, complain, complain, but the second they want to put up towers, everyone will fight them tooth and nail not to put towers in their neighborhood. Everyone wants it in the other neighborhood

What's really going on?

Verizon uses AI to monitor conversations and if it detects Lashon Hara it drops the call.
So if your calls keep dropping don’t blame Verizon blame yourself.

Verizon is not a regulated utility, and as a corporation they are under no obligation to provide you with adequate service. For example: T-Mobile has no native network in Alaska. Someone living in Anchorage can choose to pay T-Mobile each month, but has no right to complain over their lack of service.

We should adopt such a system with JCP&L, which is a regulated utility.

Every time there is a blackout, they should have to give the affected customers a discount on their next bill for the inconvenience. The refund amount should go up based on how long the power was out for.

They will have much more of an incentive to get things back up and running when every minute counts!
