A 37-year-old Maine man has been indicted on multiple charges stemming from a non-fatal police-involved shooting in South Toms River in April, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced.
Brian Lanzim, 37, of Bangor, Maine, was indicted by an Ocean County Grand Jury on September 23 on three counts of Attempted Murder, two counts of Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Home Invasion Burglary, Unlawful Use of Body Armor, and two counts of Terroristic Threats.
On April 29, officers with the South Toms River Police Department responded to a residence on Dover Road after Lanzim allegedly made threats against the residents. The threats indicated that Lanzim was traveling from Maine to South Toms River and was armed.
While officers were in the area, Lanzim allegedly drove his vehicle across the front lawn toward an officer, causing the officer to take cover behind a fence.
Lanzim then exited the vehicle and attempted to enter a locked door of the residence. Officers confronted him and observed that he was wearing a bulletproof body armor vest and was armed with a handgun.
Officers subsequently disarmed Lanzim and provided medical aid before he was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment.
A further investigation determined that Lanzim also had a loaded rifle and large-capacity ammunition magazines inside his vehicle.
Following his release from the hospital, Lanzim was transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he has remained lodged since May 4.
