Jersey Shore University Medical Center has treated at least seven traumas in the last 24 hours sustained by electric scooter-type vehicles, emergency personnel tell TLS.
“I don’t think parents realize how dangerous these things are,” said one Hatzolah member. “An awareness must be made about this.”
In Lakewood alone, there have been numerous incidents where children were injured while riding these vehicles – including on Sunday. The child from that incident has since shown significant signs of improvement, B”H.
In February, TLS reported that the New Jersey Senate Transportation Committee approved a bill which would require low-speed electric bicycles and low-speed electric scooters to be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and to be insured.
The bill, which was originally introduced late last year, was approved by a 5-0 vote.
According to the bill, which is co-sponsored by Senate President Nick Scutari and Senator Vin Gopal, it would be prohibited for anyone in New Jersey to operate a low-speed electric bike or scooter unless they are registered by the owner.
In addition, the bill requires the registered owner to maintain liability insurance coverage, personal injury protection coverage for pedestrians, and uninsured motorist coverage.
Do you think a crackdown on these vehicles is a good idea?
No it’s not a good idea but their has to be greater awareness and education to children that streets (even residential ones) are made for cars only and that drivers won’t be able to see you a lot of times when you’re weaving in and out of the street till unfortunately r”l it’s too late…
In some country’s there are tons of em. Maybe it should require strong body gear and a type of certification that the rider also keeps safety rules.
If a parent cares about their child: This Monday Erev Pesach they should take out the batteries and throw all the scooters into the dumpster to be burned with the chumetz.
Amen
Please keep reporting these incidents. Apparently, many people need more awareness…
