Do You Keep a Weapon in Your Bedroom for Self Defense?

Following the two recent robberies in both Toms River and Lakewood, there has once again been much discussion on TLS forums with regards to guns and other weapons.

Do you keep a gun or other weapon in your bedroom for self defense?

  1. I DO keep a few bottles of skunk repellent in my bedroom. I’ve also stashed away some of my wife’s gefilte fish inside the bedroom closet. My wife’s gefilte fish is my weapon of choice when it comes to scaring off the home intruders.
Last month, a home intruder braved the elements and ignored the skunk repellent, but as soon as he sniffed the gefilte fish, he got scared, and he started hollering, ‘Quick, call Poison Control! Call an ambulance! Or call a competent chef! Please help me!’ And then he made a quick dash out the door.
I’ve been told I don’t need a permit for the skunk repellent or the gefilte fish, so I guess I’m good to go. Problem is the gefilte fish is starting to get to me, which means I’ll have to start sleeping with a gas mask on my face. And that’s a huge problem for me.

    • I had an even crazier story, if you can believe it. Last month, I had a skunk following me around the neighborhood any time I left my house. So I bought myself some skunk repellant and sprayed the whole bottle right in his (or her?) face, but this only got the skunk mad and aggravated the problem. Having heard from a few friends about the gefilte fish method, I saved my wife’s gefilte fish for about three weeks until I could no longer keep it in the house, and at the first chance I had I tossed it in front of Skunky.
To this day, I can honestly say that I have never seen a skunk run so fast.

  2. The answer is yes, but it should only be yes if you are properly trained, practice often, and have a proper safety measures in place i.e. safe etc.

  3. Before donning your vigilante uniform, confidently keeping one eye open and relishing the opportunity of engagement, certain that the fate of your family and yourself rides on the power of your firearm, do you genuinely think that this is a part of your חיוב השתדלות? Or, do you think that you control your own fate?

    • It’s amazing how only in the last couple hundred years of Galus we’ve gotten to such a high level that for the first time ever we don’t have to fight for survival. Is our fair so strong that after thousands of years we are the best generation that doesn’t have to put in the work?

  4. My wife and I both have guns (in a safe) right by our bedside. Every Yid should have a gun. Until the police shows up these days, it could be too late.

  5. In my humble opinion, owning a gun in order to protect oneself from the sort of home invasions that TLS reported on is somewhat antithetical to basic Jewish hashkafa. The reason is simple.

You must ask yourself two questions.

Is keeping a gun by your bedside meant to protect your money and valuables, or your life?

Assuming your life is more important, ask yourself this question: Does the intruder have a weapon (i.e., a gun)?

The answer is either yes or no. Usually, but by no means always, the case is no, in which case the occupants are at very little risk of bodily harm.

If the intruder IS armed (which generally you will not know unless the intruder is provoked into pulling out his weapon), he either decides to use his weapon or not. If he does not perceive a threat from the home owner, it is unlikely that he pulls out his weapon. You pull out your gun, he pulls out his.

I’m not saying that owning a gun does not give people a sense of security. I’m just pointing out that a sense of security doesn’t necessarily translate into more security. You are welcome to disagree with me, but I do believe the statistics on these things are on my side.

    • I guess we are on a higher level than every single generation throughout our history who had to take up arms for survival. The way some of you are speaking is how Jews spoke before the Holocaust “suddenly happened”

      • Your post might be a relevant response to other comments, but not this one.

I am not saying not to own a gun.

I am just pointing out that gun ownership is not necessarily going to land you in a better place in the event of a home invasion, which is why most people buy guns in the first place.

Jews place priority on protecting their LIVES, not their PROPERTY.

  6. כלי חמס מכירותיהם. Stolen weapons from esav. Our weapons are our mouths. Torah and tefilla. This wa stage system throughout the golus. Have we lost our way??

  7. Yes, but I also have exterior light all around my house along with functioning cameras, I always turn on the burglar alarm before bed as well.

I have a gun in a safe near the bed. But, I believe the other things are more important.

  8. correct hishtadlus is what normal people do under the circumstances like if you are working and don’t have an IRA that’s not normal if you are sick and avoid antibiotics that’s also not normal if you are waiting for a shidduch and do not have a resume prepared for when the phone call comes that too is not normal, now it may be so that normal people do not live out where you face danger but it is also true that any normal person who does choose to move out does get for themselves comprehensive and effective equipment to resolve any compromise in personal security without having to wait for the “dispatcher to send the message and the officer to make the trip”, so while many in Lakewood are on a higher level and survive without penicillin, 401k, or shidduch resumes, still many who already moved out of the thick of Lakewood can no longer rely on what has worked for Lakewood, this is just a fact, and hishtadlus means to do what is normal for that part of the world.

  9. Over the years there have been any number of destructive home fires in and around Lakewood. I’m sure that all had kosher mezuzahs, but the smoke/fire alarms are the hishtadlus that saved lives. The NRA reports the tens of thousands of yearly instances where home defense firearms saved lives. So, just as with smoke alarms, firearms too fulfill the requirement to do ones hishtadlus, especially in these times of rabid antisemitism and increasing violent attacks against Jews. We should heed the boy scout motto: “BE PREPARED!”

    • Don’t trust the NRA, they are a gun lobby promoting gun ownership. Multiple studies prove that owning a gun doesn’t make any safer for most people. There’s absolutely no reason to own a gun in Lakewood for reasons of personal safety. Lakewood is a safe Town & there’s no chiyuv hishtadlus for almost anyone living here to own a gun. Ask your Rov for guidance if you doubt my point.

  10. * No, Guns are not “Eisav”. Violence is, not self defense.

    * How in heavens name is this Kochi V’otzem Yadi? That is just ridiculous.

    * It’s not a chiyuv histadulus… So, because it is not a chiyuv, you shouldn’t do it? Is it a chiyuv to go on that vacation? Jeez. Also, I guess BMG and the schools should drop their Armed Security?

    * Lakewood is a safe town. Yes, but. for how long? Look at the world…They don’t like us.

    * No, a gun will not prevent a Holocaust, but it sure will help keep you alive if some terrorist or home invader decides to roll into town.

    * I have my mezuza. OK, in that case, I guess you should leave your doors unlocked as well. It is a Shemirah, but that doesnt mean you cannot/should not do other things in addition.

In short, yes, I have one at home and on me at all times. Should everyone have one? Probably not. But every shul should have at least one person who is armed imo.

  11. Hashem can help you be safe without your gun. He doesn’t need your help to keep you safe. Act responsibly, Be a loyal Yid, remind yourself the purpose of your mezuzah when passing it by, & leave the rest to him. He knows how to take care of you without your gun.

    • A pro-Hamas mob descended on Cong. Bnai Yeshurun in Teaneck last night. So you think Lakewood is immune Chaimel…please get your shtetl kop out of the sand and look at what’s going on all around you since Oct 7th. If you were a Shushan Yid at the time of the 1st Purim would you be denouncing Mordechai’s call to arms? crying “we have mezuzahs, that’s all we need!” Don’t think so.
