You are 100% right… | Rabbi Dovid Abenson

The following email was sent to me by a parent after I wrote my last week’s article called “A New Asifa?”

Dear Rabbi Dovid Abenson shlita,

Gut voch. You are 100% right for hacking about kids being rejected from schools etc.  It’s a krenk an illness going on for over 60 years and getting worse.  Your idea of an Asifa will only work if there is a solution that can be implemented from then on without mosdos shrugging their shoulders.

In my opinion; The only way it will stop happening is if mosdos who take any money from the public as opposed to parents’ fees, sponsors, or private incomes should be made to collectively accept ALL children in town. Unless the mosdos have an established and recognized policy (eg a chassidish cheder will accept according to the policies of their chassidus.).

If you knock on the public’s door, you have to take any child (or at least share that responsibility with the other schools in town).

If your school is privately financed, no one can dictate how you run it or who you accept. When you rely on the public for money, you must be there for them.

It can’t be done any other way.

This is not about you, but about the mosdos.

My sincere thanks,

Mr. Goldberg*

This is my response.

Thank you for your email and advice. It is a major problem for all those thousands of parents suffering from Mosdos around the world.

When will mosdos learn?

When will they stop expelling/rejecting students?

The Menahel blames the students most of the time, saying that “he is not fit for our institution and cannot stay here” without giving any alternatives or they say that “the parents do not dress the way we want them to”. Very rarely do they blame the rebbe or the Menahel for their incompetence. Always finding excuses. For years, parents from around the world have contacted me asking for help and advice on how to talk and deal with Menahelim or rebbes. They are scared to speak to the Menahel concerning any issues their son is having with him or his rebbe, for example being sarcastic and saying hurtful words and shaming them in public by saying “you walk around as if you’re drunk” or “in the olden days you would have got a smack across your face” or “if you carry on this way you will have to pack your bags and get out of here”.

Parents have told me once, “you put forward their son’s feelings to the Menahel”. The Menahel may take it personally and target their son, eventually finding excuses and kicking him out. I’m sorry to say these parents are right. I have seen this personally so many times over the years and have written and will soon publish a series on this important topic, a true story that recently happened to me concerning my 8-year-old client.

It is an ais la’asos, a time to act, an international crisis, it must be stopped once and for all.

As I mentioned in my previous article called “A New Asifa”, I humbly call on all Gedolim, Rabbonim, Askanim, and board members of mosdos throughout the Jewish world to act now to make a new Asifa regarding the epidemic of rejection and expulsion of students that forces them to stay at home or to go to public institutions, leading to their abandonment of Yiddishkeit or suicide by overdose caused by the mosdos they were expelled from.

Let us not forget what the gemara says: – כל ישראל ערבים זה בזהAll Jews are responsible for one another. [Shevuos 39a, Sanh. 27b; also, Sifra Bechukotai 7:5; Mishneh Torah on Oaths 11:16; Or HaChaim on Deut. 29:9; Shaarei Teshuvah 3:72]

Hence, rejecting and expelling a student from their mosdos is against the Torah.

Educators who do that have blood on their hands and have murdered future generations to the end of time. They should be fired right away before they kill more students.

  1. I understand your frustration about some menahalim and Rebbeim. Please mention the overwhelming majority that are warm, sensitive and caring individuals, trying their utmost to do the most possible for the Klall and the individual.
    Thank you.

  2. I love your articles, gives me some comfort for the many years ago that I was rejected by 3 high-schools and 9 elementary schools. I was a quiet kid, tznius, middos, good grades, everything… still not enough for the mosdos… my family’s Sephardic last name didn’t seem to “fit” in with their policies. Today I’m married with children of my own, and I learned better than to sign my kids up to these mosdos. I won’t give them the honor to reject my kids the way they rejected me!
