Card games have been around for hundreds of years, having numerous variations across the world. Card games are entertaining and provide an avenue for spending quality time during family gatherings, hangouts with friends, or playing professionally.

Two such popular card games are Teen Patti and Poker. Although both of these card games involve a lot of skills and strategy and can be played online as well, there are several common grounds and some contrasting features between these two popular card games. This blog focuses on the similarities and the differences between Teen Patti and Poker to make you aware of the underlying details and help you not confuse them next time you play.

But before we get into the similarities & dissimilarities, let us know more about these two card games.

Teen Patti

Teen Patti is an Indian game that originated in the Northern part of India, otherwise known as Flash or Flush, or 3 cards. Teen Patti is essentially an inspired game from the “three card brag” of Poker. It is a popular card game, usually played at family festival gatherings. Teen Patti has now spread to many countries in Asia and abroad. It is usually played by a group of 3 to 6 players.

Greatly popularized as a betting card game mainly played at casinos, Poker is a widely popular card game across the globe. You can play poker online or at home with friends or family.

How are they Similar?

The most crucial similarity between Teen Patti and Poker is that both of these games are betting card games, and both these games require quite a bit of skill and strategy to win. It is important to know when to bet or when to fold, and the rest is luck!

We have made a list of the similarities for you to go through so you can be well versed in these two games.

  • The Bet

Known as the “blind”, both Teen Patti and Poker require players to place bets on the Poker table or the “pot”. In order to win the pot, players need to have the best possible hand.

  • Rankings of Cards

As per the poker and Teen Patti rules, the rankings of cards are similar in both these games, the “Ace” being of the highest value while a “Two” is the lowest ranking card. Both the games are played with a full deck of 52 cards.

  • Dealers and Distribution

Both Teen Patti and Poker require a dealer who deals the cards to the other players. In both these games, the dealer starts dealing the cards to the players starting with the player on his/her left, one card at a time, and goes around the circle in a clockwise manner.

  • The Gameplay

Both the games require a minimum of two players in order to place a bet. After each round, players can choose to bet again for the same amount or more, or they can “fold”. The winner is usually the player who stays till the end of the game or has the best hand.

How are they Different?

Despite them being two different variants of the same game, there are some differences between Teen Patti and Poker. The biggest difference between Teen Patti and Poker is that Teen Patti is a game of chance, but winning in a game of Poker requires quite a bit of skill, probability, and strategy.

Let’s discuss the differences.

  • Number of Cards

The maximum number of cards that each player can possess in Teen Patti is “3”, while in a game of Poker, players can get seven cards at the most.

  • Luck vs Strategy

Poker players need to follow and understand the actions of the other players apart from not giving away their own spread of cards. Teen Patti is basically a game of luck, so there is not much to focus upon.

  • Look or Don’t Look?

The Teen Patti rules are not very strict, and players can look at their cards at any time based on which they can place a bet. In Poker, players need to place a bet before they can see the next community card.

Both Teen Patti and Poker offer a lot of excitement to players as a result of the stakes put there by the bets. Although they require different analytical and strategic skills, winning in either of these games will require proper analysis and knowing when to place the bets and how much that bet should be.

You can choose any of these games to play according to your preference as both games are fun and exciting.
