Residents looking toward the sky this evening were treated to a striking celestial display, as a thin crescent moon appeared close to the bright planet Venus.
The two bright objects were clearly visible low in the western sky shortly after sunset, creating an unusual and eye catching sight that was captured on video in Toms River.
Venus, one of the brightest objects visible in the night sky, appeared near the crescent moon, making the pairing especially noticeable.

Lakewood Resident Calls on Mayor Coles to Arrange for the Skies Over Lakewood to Have the Moon & Planet Venus Positioned Next to One Another All Year Round
Lakewood resident, Shimon Skyler, looked up at the skies over Lakewood this evening and noticed that more light than usual was beaming down from the heavens due to the Moon and Planet Venus being in relatively close proximity of one other, which prompted Mr. Skyler to ask the Mayor of Lakewood why the Township could not arrange for the skies above Lakewood to have the two celestial bodies next to one other on a permanent basis.
“Dear Mr. Mayor”, Mr. Skyler asked the Mayor in TLS’s ‘Ask the Mayor’ forum, “I noticed this evening that the Moon over Lakewood was positioned right next to Planet Venus, thereby affording Lakewood residents some much needed extra light from above.”
“Mr. Mayor, I would like to ask you the following question: ‘Why is THIS night different than all other nights, and why can’t Lakewood township position the two celestial bodies next to one another EVERY night of the year?”
The Mayor offered the following response, “I appreciate your query. However, the positioning of the celestial bodies – including those celestial bodies that reside right above Lakewood township – is under the purview of heaven. Nevertheless, I will reach out to heaven to find out whether an arrangement can be made for the skies above Lakewood to have the two celestial bodies next to one another ALL 365 nights of the year. Let’s hope that next year, you will not need to ask me, ‘Why is THIS night different than all other nights?’ Thank you for your query.”
