A young student getting off a school bus in Lakewood was nearly struck by a vehicle passing the bus on the shoulder.
The incident happened yesterday evening on Squankum Road.
The dashcam video obtained by TLS shows the school bus driver turn on his lights and stop sticks, but as the student makers her way off the bus, a car can be seen using to shoulder to go around the bus, coming within inches of the student.
The incident is under investigation, and the driver of the car is expected to face charges when he or she is apprehended.
Mandatory jail time is required
Did you get his license plate number?
Just another typical day in Lakewood!! When the FLASHING lights are ON, that means STOP!!
Of course the car was wrong but would it hurt the buses to wait maybe 10 seconds from when they come to a complete stop and opening the door on BUSY STREETS to insure traffic has stopped?
Agreed. The red lights went off as the driver opened the door at 17:16:24, but the stop arm wasn’t fully deployed until 3 seconds later when the kid was already getting off the bus.
Although completely wrong, bus drivers should account for the vehicles who fail to stop at the yellow lights, and wait a few seconds after the door opens and the red lights go off befor eletting the kids off.
Also, some bus drivers sometimes wait for kids on the side of busy roads, and essentially encourage drivers to ignore their yellow lights.
to um…. The bus stopped by the shoulder, did nothing wrong. The driver passed on the right, going on the shoulder, was clearly 100% wrong!
Why does it matter who’s right?!? There are lives at stake!!!
Suspend license & have the vehicle impounded + other vehicles the offender might own.
Not justifying this at all but to a certain extent if bus drivers were to maintain a certain level of mindfulness a large percentage of the issue would dissipate.
For example, if bus drivers would disengage their lights while waiting for a child to come from down the block or while talking to a parent that would reduce the “boy who cried wolf” effect for drivers who feel that the delay is too long.
Or perhaps run your yellow lights for a drop longer prior to opening the door and switching to red lights. If the signal at an intersection has its yellow light running for as short as some buses run their yellows for wet would fight vigorously to have that corrected.
Again, this would not justify passing a bus with its red lights on, this is simply a pragmatic look at some of the (many) causes and some mitigation techniques that might help.
Stop blaming the bus drivers! It is not their responsibility to cater to drivers, it’s their responsibility to get the kids to and from safely! Where’s the driver’s personal responsibility? Your impatience is not important. The safety of the children is important. The law is the law! You do not pass school busses flashing their lights!
You all remember Boro Park …it hasn’t changed either
When people are trained to be mevatel others, it becomes difficult for them to differentiate.
That’s why in the past our rabbonim tought us not to be mevatel others; English teachers, people who work, parents, Tziyoinim etc.
Today’s rabbonim understand differently.
It’s proper to be mevatel other Yidden who don’t have the proper (ie. yours) hashkofa.
So putting a girl’s life in danger is not as important as a ben Torah getting to his destination quickly.
Why are people getting all worked up?
