UPDATE: Toms River Planning Board Recommends Zoning Changes for Multi-Family Development; Council Vote Next

The Toms River Township Planning Board voted this evening to recommend that the Township Council amend the township’s zoning to allow multi-family residential development on several key parcels in the township.

The recommendation applies to properties located near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Route 70, as well as parcels along Route 9 near Riverwood Drive. If adopted, the zoning changes could allow multi-family housing developments on those sites.

The Planning Board’s action does not change the zoning at this time but instead serves as a formal recommendation to the governing body. The final decision now rests with the Toms River Township Council, which must vote on whether to adopt the proposed zoning amendments.

The Township Council is scheduled to hold a meeting tomorrow at 6:00 PM, where the matter could move forward as the next step in the approval process.

The proposed zoning changes have drawn significant attention from residents and community organizations concerned about the potential impact of higher-density housing on traffic, congestion, and the character of surrounding neighborhoods.

I don’t live in Toms River. I have lived in Lakewood for nearly 50 years. Please, Toms River, don’t let what happened to Lakewood happen to Toms River or any other town. Lakewood used to be so pretty. When I moved here from Brooklyn, I was so happy to be rid of the noise, traffic and crowded conditions. But all those problems followed me here because our own township allowed it to happen. By issuing zoning variances like candy, beautiful spacious streets turned into crowded, ugly developments. Please don’t let that happen to other towns. The condition of Lakewood should be a warning for everyone else! Keep suburban towns suburban! Don’t turn them into cities!

Everything is relative. So when some people want to build shuls and schools, others can say that we don’t want growth.Once you start taking positions against growth, then you can’t complain when others take positions against the growth that you want

We cant complain housing is unaffordable if we don’t want them to build more basics of supply and demand the more houses there are the less there will be if we add another 1500 units in the area the demand will be less…

Are we also going to come out and agree with them when they decide that shuls create traffic and should not be allowed ? What about schools and yeshiva? We shoukd be against those also if we are fighting traffic and development. Let’s not be hypocrites.

Not To worry – Only in Lakewood does the council vote for whatever the planning board approves and then blames the planning board for all the overdevelopment etct! in other towns the council votes as they see fit..
