Beginning August 1, New Jersey restaurants, food trucks, cafes and other food service businesses will no longer be allowed to automatically include single-use plastic utensils, condiment packets or napkins with takeout and delivery orders unless customers specifically request them, as the state’s new “Skip the Stuff” law takes effect.
The law, signed earlier this year by former Governor Phil Murphy on the final day in office, is intended to reduce unnecessary plastic waste and encourage customers to take only the disposable items they need. State officials and environmental advocates say millions of plastic forks, knives, spoons and condiment packets are discarded unused each year.
Under the new requirements, restaurants may still provide single-use utensils, napkins and condiments, but only after a customer asks for them. The rules apply whether an order is placed in person, over the phone, online or through a third-party delivery service. Digital ordering platforms must default to providing no disposable utensils or condiments, requiring customers to actively opt in if they want them included.
The law also changes dine-in service. Full-service restaurants with seating for 10 or more customers must provide reusable, washable utensils for patrons eating on-site instead of disposable plastic cutlery.
Certain facilities are exempt, including K-12 schools, healthcare facilities and correctional institutions. Self-service stations may continue offering individual utensils and condiments, provided they are not distributed in bundled disposable packs.
Businesses that fail to comply will receive a warning for a first violation. A second violation may result in a fine of up to $100, while third and subsequent violations can carry penalties of up to $250. Revenue from fines will support the state’s Clean Communities Program Fund for litter cleanup and public education.
The law will be phased in further over the next two years. Beginning August 1, 2027, restaurants will no longer be permitted to distribute bundled disposable utensil packs, and additional requirements for certain casual dining establishments and food courts take effect August 1, 2028.
The measure builds on New Jersey’s broader efforts to curb single-use plastics, including the state’s 2022 ban on single-use plastic carryout bags, polystyrene foam food-service products and restrictions on plastic straws.

There’s a basic concept here. Socialism, Communism, standard liberal democrat policies are all feel good slogans , but people do not realize it is all about power and control that has no expanded anticipation of future implications , even if it is well intended.
Example: stores being required to no longer use disposable plastic bags resulted in the creation of a whole new product, the reusable bags that use the same energy dump pollution into the system also requires shipping and environmental issues, destroying resources not much different than the plastic bags.
Reusable energy sounds great , except for the fact that it also pollutes because it uses the same resources to create the supposed green energy. is inefficient , often destroys wildlife. Etc.
While I agree , there is a tremendous amount of waste by all of the plastics that are given out and disposed of, and while I agree , companies lose money , when they put out plastics and people take advantage and grab as much as they want , and then maybe don’t use it…
An anticipation of some liberal person arguing and pushback , i’m going to already answer you , i’m not saying plastic is okay and i’m certainly not saying there isn’t abundant excessive waste,
What I am saying is that liberal knee-jerk policies are to regulate.Make laws that inconvenience everybody without patient methodical , real world compromise solutions.
So now there”s a law in place that will carry violations and penalties without thoroughly developing a more reasonable middle ground fix.
Another example is while a company might lose money by putting out plastics for people to take as they want.And some people take advantage of that and take too many, now the very same company is going to possibly new by troubling their employees with the burden of the extra work involved.
I’m giving general quick answers so you’re welcome to take apart what I’m saying.But the general idea remains true.
Liberal policies that we’re seeing now best exemplified by FAUCI Mask mandates is not just about control , it could be harmful like the young athletes who had vaccines and died because of the effects of the vaccine on the heart. In addition to suffocating little children by forcing masks on them and keeping kids out of school.

‘New Law Prohibiting Restaurants From Serving Plastic-Like Food Takes Effect Immediately!’ says Disgruntled Customer
Disgruntled restaurant customer, George Yuckman, told reporters today that he is enacting a new law countrywide that will ban restaurants from serving food that looks like, feels like and tastes like plastic.
“Enough with this nauseating, plastic-like food,” Mr. Yuckman asserted while sitting at a table at a local NJ eatery. “It’s destroying our digestive ecosystems!”
“Start serving us some genuine, tasty food already, or pay a hefty fine!” he said.
“Oh my!” he added in a disgusted tone of voice after taking a bite out of his food. “This steak sandwich tastes like plastic ziploc bags! Seriously, is this what I shelled out $15 for?! Crazy!”
“These people leave me with no choice,” he said, “I’m enacting my new legislation right now! No ifs, ands, or buts! Effective immediately, anyone who serves plastic-tasting food to the public will be fined to the gills, and they will be brought before a Board of Health tribunal. Best of luck with the tribunal!”
For the past decade or so, Mr. Yuckman has been a leading food critic on many of the popular online review platforms, accusing restaurant owners of dishing out “yucky, foul-tasting, plastic-like food that leaves permanent damage upon the human body’s ecosystem.” However, this is the first time that the longtime food critic has actually passed legislation banning restaurants from serving the “plastic-like” or “plastic-tasting” food.
“I ain’t running for congress,” Mr. Yuckman reasoned, “so I gotta take the bull by the horn and pass this legislation all by myself.”
Ironically, as Mr. Yuckman was about to leave the restaurant, one of the waiters brought out a sandwich that didn’t look or feel like plastic.
Mr. Yuckman glanced at the sandwich, touched it, and then sat back down and took a huge bite out of it. He then proceeded to spit out the entire mouthful of food into a garbage bin.
“Quick, give me a huge drink of water!” he hollered.
“Oh, my,” he added, “that sandwich didn’t look like plastic, but is sure tasted like plastic! Sheesh!”
Mr. Yuckman then proceeded to pull out his phone and make a call to the NJ Board of Health to report the state’s first violator of the new ‘Yuckman law’.
