UPDATE: Jackson Township Says 458 Rental Properties Violating Registration Ordinance

Jackson Township officials announced a major enforcement initiative targeting landlords who have failed to comply with local rental registration requirements, with hundreds of properties now facing violations and steep penalties.

According to Mayor Jennifer Kuhn and Township administrators, a recent cross-comparison audit conducted by staff within the Rental Safety Housing Bureau identified 458 rental properties that had not been properly registered as of Wednesday morning.

Township officials said the unregistered properties are currently in violation of local ordinances governing rental property registration.

As a result of the noncompliance, the Township says landlords collectively owe $45,800 in unpaid registration fees. In addition, current ordinances impose a $500 fine for each non-compliant property, bringing the total amount in penalties to $229,000. Combined, the Township says the outstanding balance tied to the violations now totals $274,800.

Beginning Friday, May 8, 2026, the Rental Safety Housing Bureau will begin issuing Notices of Violation to all landlords identified as being out of compliance.

“We are not going to stand for landlords not following the rules,” Mayor Kuhn said in a statement. “The Township will fully enforce Council’s ordinances to ensure fairness, safety, and accountability across all rental properties in Jackson. For too long, many landlords have taken advantage of our town and have ignored our laws. Under my administration, that stops now!”

Township officials are urging all property owners to immediately review their rental registration status and bring their properties into compliance in order to avoid further enforcement action.

Officials said the initiative is part of Jackson Township’s ongoing effort to maintain safe and properly regulated housing while ensuring all landlords are held to the same standards.
