UPDATE: Jackson Township Council President Mordy Burnstein Condemns Antisemitic Vandalism

In response to the vandalism, as well antisemitic and other hate messages at a Jackson school, Jackson Council President Mordechai Burnstein issued the following statement to TLS:

I strongly condemn the recent acts of vandalism and the hateful behavior we have witnessed in our town. Jackson deserves better.

Every resident has the right to question government decisions, oppose development, criticize elected officials, and advocate for change. Those are fundamental rights in a free society and should never be confused with hatred.

But there is a clear difference between criticizing policies and targeting people because of who they are.

When rhetoric shifts from debating issues to blaming, stereotyping, or demeaning an entire religious or ethnic community, it crosses a line. That kind of language doesn’t solve problems. It divides neighbors, fuels hostility, and creates an environment where hateful acts become more likely.

We should be able to disagree passionately while still recognizing one another’s humanity. We can debate zoning, development, taxes, and the future of our town without demonizing our neighbors.

Every resident of Jackson—regardless of religion, race, or background—deserves to feel safe, respected, and welcome in the community they call home.

As Council President, I unequivocally condemn acts of hatred, intimidation, and vandalism. I also encourage everyone, especially those with a public platform, to choose words that inform rather than inflame. Strong opinions are part of democracy. Hatred is not.

Jackson deserves better, and each of us has a role in making sure our disagreements never become an excuse for prejudice or violence.
