Hurricane Joaquin – still a Category 4 Hurricane – has taken a turn away from the East Coast, the National Weather Service says.
Despite the turn, heavy rain is expected to last through the weekend and into early next week.
A Wind Advisory is also in effect until 6 PM on Saturday, with winds gusts reaching 45-50 MPH.
TLS spoke with Harav Simcha Bunim Cohen, who said residents are encouraged to tie down their Sukkahs with string that isn’t Mekabel Tumah.

Tie down sukkah? or tie down schach?
Why does the sukkah need to be tied down with something that’s not מקבל טומאה
String is twisted fibre and according to some poskim is mekabel tuma. Single fibre fishing line or plastic ties however, while not kosher for schach itself could according to some poskim be used to hold up schach – added to the fact that they are unnecessary if there was only a ruach metzuya as opposed to a major storm there is no problem
Definitely sounds like a misquote. Firstly the sukkah unless is wood has some type of metal.. And if it is the sechach most senior poskim hold if the sechach is held down with a ruach metzuya you can tie down with anything. Back to the old rule.. Ask your local Rabbi..
the hurricane was never supposed to actualy hit lakewood. if fact it was forcasted to go out to the open ocean over 24 hrs ago so not sure why all the hype was necessary. there may be a couple of 45 to 50 mph wind gusts on shabbos but that is not related to the hurricane….
the hurricane did not turn away!the storm is hundreds of miles away It was forcasted to turn here eventually but that isn’t forcasted anymore!!
Should Shlak be out or rolled up, as the winds can damage it even if it is tied down
Are zip ties mikable tuma?
Baruch, if plastic is mekabel tumah – which is a machlokes haposkim AND string is a kli (also machlokes) then zip ties are mekabel tumah – whereas fishing line is not a kli at all.
As far as forecast – regardless of storm we may be getting 39mph winds – more than ruach metzuya – through tonight which may be a problem for schach without tying it down
