TODAY: Primary Day In New Jersey

After being postponed from June 2nd due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Primary Day in New Jersey is finally here, allowing registered voters to choose their nominees in a variety of elections being held this November.

While Joe Biden and Donald Trump will undoubtedly win their respective party’s primaries for president, some races downballot in New Jersey are not quite as clear. On the Republican side, Rik Mehta and Hirsch Singh are battling for the nomination to go up against Cory Booker for his seat in the US Senate. While Singh has the party line in Ocean County, Mehta is believed to be the favorite to win both the Ocean County vote as well as the nomination.

Locally, three candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge 20-term Representative Chris Smith for his seat in the House. Stephanie Schmid is expected to emerge victorious this evening in that primary.

Rep. Smith is being challenged in the Republican primary by Alter Eliezer Richter, who is running under “Stand For G-d With True Pride.”

Lakewood’s Democratic Mayor Ray Coles is running unopposed for a 7th term on the Township Committee, while on the Republican side, Harold Hershkowitz is challenging Committeeman Mike D’Elia for his spot on the Committee.

All registered voters in New Jersey received mail-ballots so that they need not go to polling places in person, and unregistered voters received mail-in ballot applications.

Voters who plan to cast their ballots in person should expect limited occupancy and longer lines.

  1. Next time you’re stuck in traffic remember you have yourself to blame! Keep voting the same people in to thank them for the great job they have done.

  2. Voting practice this time seems incredibly prone to fraud. Not only did I receive a ballot in the mail but when I went to vote I did not need to show any proof of ID. They did not even ask me my name.
