Lakewood has seen an uptick in accidents in 2018, according to data obtained by The Lakewood Scoop.
According to police records, there were 5,134 accidents in Lakewood in 2018, compared to 4,841 in 2017. That’s an average of approximately 14 accidents daily.
However, Lakewood did see a drop in fatal accidents in 2018.
According to the reports, there were six fatal accidents in Lakewood in 2018, compared to 12 fatal accidents in 2017. 2016 also had six fatal accidents.
Last year, the NJSP added extra patrol to Lakewood in response to the numerous fatal accidents.
In an earlier report on TheLakewoodScoop.com, the NJSP stated, “Lakewood is specifically an area where there’s been a high rate of pedestrian and cyclist fatal accidents – so we work with the local authorities, even the county authorities, to target officially high traffic and high accident areas,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman added that these campaigns are set up after analyzing stats throughout the State. Lakewood was a ripe target.
Toward the end of 2017, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office also added patrols in Lakewood due to the string of pedestrian deaths, but the campaign focused on specific areas such as Route 70 and Cedarbridge Avenue – where multiple fatal accidents occurred.
“Based on those numbers, they may continue if they don’t see those trends going down,” the spokesman said last year.
Which means, you can expect to see even more NJSP enforcement in 2019.
Lakewood Police Department’s Traffic Safety Sergeant Frank Work had this message for the Lakewood community.
“Think safety first – slow down, be aware of your surroundings and buckle up.”
Keep up the over development
Did the amount of people/drivers increase? I’d assume so and therefore actually a decrease year over year.
Not implying to not drive safe, just pointing out that the study is likely misleading.
Those are only the ones which were reported. Wondering how many involved pedestrians.
Well, you can expect some more STATE TROOPERS in the area.
Plain and simple: this town isn’t meant for the bustling city that it has become with all the building! Stop the building and build drainage!!
Guys be aware there is huge drainage issues in Albert area and many other areas in lakewood
Its time that we stop the over-development in town. Move to Jackson or Toms river but no more developments, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great idea lets share the overcrowding with our neighboring towns.
Kudos to NJSP all the stops and tickets really paid off. Fatales are down!!!! Please come back harder than ever in 2019
How about some speed enforcement on Cedarbridge between S Clover and MLK please!!!!!!
With the Sunset infrastructure repairs, Powderhorn is rife with speeders even though it is clearly marked as a “Deaf Child Zone.” Shameful.
I think the problem is that people honestly don’t notice that sign.
The Lakewood Township has a lot of $ from all the taxes that are being paid by the home owners. Maybe ask the Township if they can kindly put up a sign with flashing lights like they do with some “stop” signs. Look at
all the construction in Lakewood, the Township for sure has the funds. Please ask them.
Also a big surge in devolopments. Coincidence? I think so!
Every little fenderbender counts as an accident in this report. The main concern should be injuries & deaths. It’s not clear how many injuries there were.
Duh, more buildings being built squashed together equals more cars on streets equals more accidents
It also causes the auto insurance rates to go up in this town. I have a great driving record but, I pay much more for car insurance than I should have to. People should be more patient when they drive and not disregard stop signs, and if someone in front of you is more cautious about turning left, don’t honk or go around in front of him. That’s dangerous. Don’t text and drive either. Just be more observant when you drive and more careful.
Where else is the drainage problem, besides Albert?, Why cant developers be told no? This town was Bricksberg, Now Lakewoodopoly. Bought and Sold.
