A young Jewish woman imprisoned in Slovakia once told Aleph that every time she received one of our letters, she would read it 100 times.

That is what knowing you are not forgotten can mean when you are alone, thousands of miles from home.

Right now, Aleph is urgently helping a Jew who has been imprisoned in Western Asia for 7 months after entering with a small amount of legally prescribed, FDA-approved medication. He faces 8 years in prison—but BEH, payment of a substantial government fine can secure his immediate release. He is suffering from serious medical issues and acute depression. BH almost at the finish line in securing funds for this effort.

And he is only one of many. Aleph’s International Department brings kosher food to isolated Jews, arranges visits and Yom Tov supplies, advocates for those in dangerous conditions, and intervenes in life-threatening situations in prisons around the world.

No One Alone. No One Forgotten.

We have an opportunity now to reach a $180,000 matching grant to sustain and expand this lifesaving work. In many cases, it is literally Pikuach Nefesh.

There is a famous story of a Jew who learned that another Jew—someone he had never even met—was being held prisoner by a local squire. The squire agreed to free him only if this Jew drank ten cups of vodka. Though he could barely continue, he drank them all—and secured the prisoner’s freedom.

When he later arrived drunk at Kol Nidrei, Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev would not allow anyone to throw him out, saying: “He has already accomplished everything one can achieve on Yom Kippur. He is already holding by Simchas Torah.”

Today, we too have the opportunity to be a lifeline to brothers and sister we may have never seen—and remind them that wherever they are, they are not alone and they are not forgotten.
