The Hustle vs. The Law: Project 432 Brings Vital Legal Awareness to Coventry Shul
More than 50 local professionals and entrepreneurs gathered at Lakewood’s Coventry Shul for a Financial Integrity Masterclass led by Rabbi Yakov Goldstein, senior lecturer for the Aleph Institute’s Project 432.
What compels dozens of busy business owners and employees from different industries to take time out of their schedules right before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to attend an in-person event? For the Coventry Shul community, the answer was a shared commitment to growth, integrity, and proactively protecting what matters most.
The presentation provided an essential roadmap by seamlessly weaving together practical professional strategy, the uncompromising ethical grounding of Torah Hashkafah, clear legal boundaries regarding contemporary business law, and real-life case studies that illustrated how to successfully manage challenging business decisions. For the attendees, the realizations were eye-opening and integral to their future success.
For Meir G., who balances running small businesses with corporate work, the session drove home a simple but important point: “Not knowing something was wrong, or not taking the time to find out, doesn’t protect you from getting hurt by it.” He emphasized that getting comfortable with how things have always been done is a trap that limits growth, declaring, “I don’t want to be someone who toes the line anymore. I want to actually know where the line is.”
The impact of our business decisions extends far beyond the bottom line; it is about building a sustainable legacy. Meir G. highlighted how easily individuals can be distracted by the prospect of making money, particularly in situations where people are “just trusting blindly” when relatives or good friends are involved. For him, that makes understanding the full implications of business decisions and documents especially important: “You’ve got to educate yourself. And I think that would help a lot of people if more people understood this concept.”
A common misconception in our community is the belief that good intentions automatically offer sufficient protection in the business world. Yonah G. has seen firsthand why that isn’t enough. “Even if someone tries to do the right thing, it doesn’t necessarily protect them. You might think you’re doing the right thing, but if you don’t have the right help and guidance, you’re not necessarily protected.” He warned against relying on assumptions or a misguided moreh hetter, noting that with proper education, “you realize that it’s just not the case.”
The atmosphere inside the Coventry Shul was one of urgent, positive awakening. Chaim B. described what he saw during the evening, noting that Rabbi Goldstein “really brought an awareness of why it is so important to make a kiddish hashem and do business honestly and not play games when it comes to legalities.” He recognized the importance of education when it comes to living our lives as law-abiding Americans and Jewish people.
The evening’s profound impact was made possible by the vision and support of our corporate sponsors: R’ Itche Rosenbaum, President of Madison Commercial Real Estate Services; R’ Mordechai Kliger of Creative Insurance; and Gavriel Gugenheim of Gugenheim Realty.
As the evening made clear, the mandate was about tangible action. Yonah G. put it simply: “A person should always be proactive. You shouldn’t wait until it’s too late. Once you’re facing a possible issue, you should be proactive and seek help. Seek guidance from professionals or someone who could help you who has experience.” He concluded that “every single Shul and Moisad should really bring in the workshop.”
Project 432 is a comprehensive initiative of the Aleph Institute dedicated to providing preventative education, legal awareness, and professional guidance to ensure our community thrives ethically and successfully. The Financial Integrity Masterclass is just one of these vital programs designed to protect families and build stronger, more resilient businesses.
