The Birthday That Became a Fight for Shugi’s Life
It was supposed to be a birthday filled with joy. Instead, a little girl’s birthday became the beginning of a desperate fight for her life.
Avishag Esther, lovingly known as Shugi, is only a year and a half old. She was supposed to be celebrating her birthday surrounded by her family, balloons, a birthday cake, and the simple joy that every child deserves.
Her mother had prepared for a beautiful day of simchah.
But before the celebration could even begin, everything changed.
Shugi suddenly began crying not an ordinary cry, but a cry that immediately alarmed her mother. She continued crying until she vomited, and in that terrifying moment, her mother realized that something was seriously wrong.
The balloons remained at home.
Shugi was rushed to the hospital.
Her birthday dress was replaced with hospital clothes.
The candles were replaced with medical tests.
And the tears of excitement were replaced with tears of fear.
While her father is away serving in the reserves, her mother remains at her little daughter’s side, facing a nightmare no parent ever imagines having to endure.
Shugi is only a year and a half old.
She should be learning new words, playing with her toys, running into her mother’s arms, and discovering the beautiful world around her.
Instead, this precious little girl is now fighting for her life.
Her parents are doing everything possible to obtain the care she needs. But the urgent medical expenses and the tremendous burden this crisis has placed upon the family are far beyond what they can manage alone.
A birthday should be a day of simchah.
It should never become a fight for survival.
Today, Shugi’s family is turning to the tzibbur for help.
Help Shugi come home.
Help her return to the childhood that was suddenly taken from her.
