UPDATE 8:05 AM: A 20-year-old Lakewood resident remains in critical condition after being struck by a motor vehicle Tuesday night, Capt. LeRoy Marshall of the Lakewood Police Department tells TLS.
At approximately 10:00 p.m., patrol officers responded to the area of James Street and Ridgeway Place for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers found Hatzolah personnel rendering emergency medical aid to the victim, who was unconscious. The pedestrian was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for further treatment and remains in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was traveling westbound on James Street and had turned onto Ridgeway Place when the collision occurred. The driver immediately stopped, remained at the scene, and contacted emergency responders.
“The driver remained on scene, immediately contacted emergency services, and displayed no signs of impairment,” said Capt. LeRoy Marshall.
The Lakewood Police Department’s Traffic and Safety Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Like, the person may have thought that it was unnecessary for me to say the comment, or that it was stating the obvious so he gives a thumbs down. But he doesn’t realize it is going to look absurd to anyone who looks at it: Someone say refuah sheleima, and you say the comment is no good!
(Just to explain what I mean that the person doesn’t have experience with public speaking or writing, I mean realizing that people think very differently and may not understand what you’re trying to say, and it’s not a live discussion for them to be able to ask you – which is good and normal in real life, and so maybe that is the reason he doesn’t have the experience to think a bit deeper.)

In general some good advice would be:
The pedestrians should wear a reflective belt.
If no belt available, wearing a white shirt is a good idea. If you are wearing a jacket, maybe carry the jacket in your hand and the driver might see the white shirt.
Also the drivers, at night, need to drive a little bit slower.
Years ago Lakewood was a small town.
Today Lakewood has thousands and thousands of drivers and also thousands and thousands of pedestrians.
We need to work together to survive.
We need more lighting all over Lakewood right now, and Lakewood Township should demand that JCP&L put up LED lighting all over the township and stop this nonsense. This township is so dark. We need LED lights to prevent tragedies like this from happening agaid again all over the township, including Route 9 and Route 88 and Route 70 and New Hampshire and County Line and Cedar Bridge, Central Ave in Clifton, and Forest. And all over Lakewood, stop wasting time and get serious. We also need the Police Department to do their job too and patrol all over township and put end of illegal parking including shopping center and corners and more further places. We need more Lighting around Park and other place so keep our community safer. We need increase traffic light all over township to slow down traffic and change traffic patterns in this township. Let make it happen and make traffic slowly and safer.

As commenter Avraham said, we have had many reflector campaigns, and everyone is supposed to be wearing one. And all bikes (including pedal bikes and of course e-bikes and scooters) and required by law to have lights front and back. (If only there was a law or twp. ordinance for walkers to wear reflectors.)
About street lighting, they have been upgrading the lighting, over the years, especially in high pedestrian traffic areas, but the fact is that night is night, and all peds. should be wearing reflectors. It is very easy to put one and off – takes only a few seconds, and if you keep it with you, you have it all the time. It’s that simple.
I have never heard of a ped. being hit with a reflector, except once in another city, and that was a hit-and-run, so something was clearly wrong with the driver.
We feel terrible for this fellow, but it’s not the first or second. Many tens of people have been hit, over the years. Sadly, an average of one per year has died. While it’s a tiny fraction of the number of people walking, people forget that every time they go out at night it is dangerous, and you must therefore be visible.
Yes, it is a fact there are cars, and when they drive safely in the lane – as they do, it’s quite good. But peds need to be visible, and there are many different layouts of streets – curves, hills etc, some with more cars parked, less etc. etc, and you have to be prepared for that and be visible.
Consider that air traffic control for planes needs radar; if there was a plane crash due to radar being out and planes still being allowed to fly in that area, people would be shocked and appalled. Why do drivers deserve anything less?! They need a “radar” view of the road – they must be able to see everything at a glance. They cannot have to stare at one spot and say ‘is there something there, I’m not sure’. You cannot drive like that, you need to be able to see at a glance. Studies show that drivers glance around, and therefore signs must be very concise and to the point – drives don’t have time to read speeches.
All peds must understand this well, and the reflectors must be strongly encouraged. Many do, but sadly, not all get the message, with all due respect. We must advise people who come here from out of town etc.
Yesterday I was in the car with my dad and all of a sudden a little kid ran into the street and then ran across to her house and the my dad was about to pass the site and she ran again in the street my dad was beeping for like 15 minutes and there was no parents there thank gd no one got hurt or killed but it is super super dangerous and you have to really be careful
