Surveillance Video: Biker Crossing Against Traffic Struck by Vehicle in Lakewood

A biker crossing against the traffic light and against traffic was struck by a vehicle last night in Lakewood.

The incident happened shortly after 10:00 PM at the intersection of Route 88 and Clifton Avenue.

Video obtained by TLS shows the biker attempting to cross diagonally across both Clifton Avenue and Route 88 when he was struck by a vehicle making a left onto Route 88.

The biker was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood with non-life-threatening injuries.

I would change the title to “Surveillance Video: Biker Crossing Against Traffic Struck by Visually Impaired Driver”.

That’s not fair. How was the driver supposed to notice a bicyclist (with no reflectors, and no lights, in black clothing) coming from an unexpected direction, with all that glair and light shining into his eyes?

From the angle of the camera I can clearly see the car’s headlights on the cyclist before impact .

i do not see brake lights before impact though

because the driver is looking to the left, toward where he is going, as he should, not to his right /immediate front assuming some fool will pull out in front of him.

When driving in Lakewood one should always assume that someone is going to pull out in front of you.

Yes, bikers are required by law to have lights – front and back. And all peds. should wear reflectors – it takes just a few seconds to put on.

Are you for real! The bike is 1,000% at fault and deserve to be hit what was he even doing out at 10:00 at night on these roads on a bicycle! Not to mention not following a single traffic law. I’m sorry he got hit but Lord knows it wasn’t the driver’s fault and thank God it wasn’t more serious

some people can’t afford a car

he doesn’t need a reason to be biking at 10 pm just like you don’t need a reason to be driving at 10 pm

regardless of the time, he must have lights, and should cross straight with crosswalk. Ironically DB Electronics used to be in the building in the background, and they sold bike lights!

i actually just checked it up, and in cases like these your both guilty, driver and bicyclist.

just a message for drivers your almost always guilty so it’s worth to always be MORE alert while driving. You can check it up but your always guilty at least partially if you hit a person or bike rider

I can’t see vid, but from what people are saying, he no lights or reflector, and was crossing diagonally. I’m not sure what law you found, but from what I have seen, a driver is 100% INNOCENT if he hits a pedestrian in dark clothing. Perhaps there is a difference for a crosswalk, but even there, the ped has to at least be able to be seen!

That is not true, bikers are not pedestrians, biker is 100% at fault.

The law is sneseless. Why should the driver be responsible for a suicidal idiot jumping in front of them?!!!!!

The new street lighting only creates glare and shadows. The lights should be so bright it looks like daylight. These lights are terrible

What new street lighting – on Clifton Ave (where this is)? I don’t remember seeing anything particularly new.

I know this happens a lot. bicyclists and people assume that they have the right away at all times.
And drivers assume that when the light turns green, they have the right to turn or go straight at all times but, that is not necessarily true. When the light turns green, you should use the green light as if it’s a stop sign or a yield, sign. You must look to make sure that no one is in the cross walk, There are no bikes or motor scooters riding by.
