Oh, New Jersey. You don’t get much right. The roads are terrible, the taxes outrageous, and the unfunded liabilities criminally high.
If that weren’t enough, the Garden State is now also ranked the worst state in the entire country to retire in. Although retirees above 65 receive income from Social Security and sometimes pensions, for most it is not enough to cover all their expenses. This leads retirees to look for the states where it would make most financial sense to spend their retirement years.
To determine which states are best for retirement, personal finance website Wallethub ranked all 50 states across 45 indicators of retirement-friendliness, including affordability, health-related factors, and overall quality of life, and scored them on a scale between 0 and 100.
New Jersey came in dead last with an overall score of 37.41. New York didn’t fare much better, coming in 49th with a score of 41.86.
The top-ranked state for retirement is, unsurprisingly, Florida.
If Florida is reading this, would you like to trade governors? No refunds.
