The Star-K this afternoon issued an alert regarding a certain KitchenAid product which has issued with its Shabbos Mode.
“It has come to our attention that some KitchenAid KRFF577KPS 26.8 Cu. Ft. Standard-Depth French Door Refrigerator with Exterior Ice & Water Dispenser units have a malfunctioning Sabbath Mode,” the organization stated. “This issue has been identified in recently purchased units.”
To determine if you own an affected unit, enter Sabbath Mode and hold down the door switches. If you hear a fan activate or deactivate when the switches are pressed and released, then Sabbath Mode is not working correctly.
KitchenAid is working on a solution to resolve the issue. In the interim, to use on Shabbos or Yom Tov, STAR-K recommends taping down the door switches along with setting Sabbath Mode.
You can email [email protected] if you would like to be notified when a fix is available.
The Consumer should consult with their halachic authority re Star-K’s “Shabbos Mode”.
From what I have read, this mode just delays the function a few seconds.
You should read more. RSZA allowed this. Lechatchilla.
Dear Amchu,
The fridges are totally fine according to most everyone… Especially in Lakewood…. star k is actually more Machmir about fridges than many of Lakewood’s meaning Poskim.
1. see the letter PERMITTING these refrigerators from Rav Dovid Feinstein ZT”L and yblcht”a Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky SHLIT”A in Yeshurun Volume 36.
2. There is also a big Kuntres from R Shasai Kahn Shlit”a of the KJ Kollelim permitting them all Lechatchila
Star K refrigerator Shabbos mode disconnects the fans , dampers, displays from the door switches and puts the defrost coils on a timer. Even a bit more machmir than R Shlomo Zalman by delaying the compressor…see https://www.star-k.org/articles/articles/seasonal/6762/using-an-oven-on-shabbos-yom-tov/
I once believed this so I bought a GE oven with OU instead and the exhaust fan turned off when I opened the door on Shabbos.
Paid over $250 extra,go figure.
Now I use a blech.
