[U/D] Abbot, the maker of Similac baby formulas is voluntarily recalling some of its products from the United States, Puerto Rico, Caribbean and Guam. The problem was caused by the FDA which found small pieces of beetles in a factory that makes the baby formulas. Although the beetles are not supposed to be a health risk or at least a serious health risk, babies could develop stomach aches and might even refuse to consume their formula.
If a product has been consumed by a baby from one of the products recalled, Abbot is suggesting that a physician be consulted.
WIC agencies across New Jersey received word of the recall from the state Thursday afternoon along with instructions to issue concentrate formula to participants who have tainted formula.
The bugs were small common warehouse beetles found sometime last week. Once the discovery was made, production was stopped and containers of formula from the tainted line were tested.
The products recalled can be located on the companies website at www.similac.com or by calling them at 888-376-2054 .
UPDATE: 9:00 p.m. TLS spoke with Shoprite who said that most powder Similacs have been taken off the shelves, and are offering a refund to customers who purchased the cans at their store.
Parents can use the liquid formulas as an alternative. TLS-CAC.
