The clocks fall back next Sunday, November 1, and with them come the early Shabbosim: Hadlokas Neiros in Lakewood on Friday, November 6 will be 4:30 PM.
And with the short Fridays comes the annual question for the local girls’ high schools: should students be off on winter Fridays to help their parents prepare for Shabbos?
Several years ago, posed the question to readers, and 55% voted for students to have the day off to help parents.
So we’re asking again: has anything changed? Take the poll below, and let us know in the comments what your school’s schedule looks like this year: regular hours, early dismissal, or something in between. Parents, students and menahalos are invited to share what’s working and what isn’t.

Not unless they have school on Sunday to make up for it.
This would be good if they then have school on Sundays.
They legit have school for 1.5 hours
thay ont help but just wake up late after staying up the late.
My kids don’t have bussing, even though we are mandated, and it means spending half of the short Friday in the car dropping off and picking them up. For 2 hours of school, it wastes the entire short Friday.
They won’t help, it’ll be a day of more needing to keep up with cohens and go to more eateries and spend their parents money, and have their parents drive them all over town. On the topic when shabbos is at 8 pm why are kids home at 1115 am
In theory it sounds nice but how many of the girls that would be off actually help and how many would sleep in and then go out to do their own thing
Maybe some will help but it probably would end up being a day girls hang out with their friends. I would only vote yes to give the teachers more time at home. Otherwise let the girls help when they get home
I think a really short day would be good. Wake up early! Daven! Learn Something and be back home by 11am. before the traffic!!
Yes. School on Fridays.
How many girls will be up, davened, and ready to help before deamissal anyway?
Girls should have school on Sunday!
I think that if there would be a policy to let girls help on fridays, it should be legit and not have girls out shopping or having fun with friend. There should be accountability but its very hard to pull off…its a nice thought if done right. With daas torah of course
Alternatively, we can teach teens that Fridays are weekdays.
Then, when they enter the workforce, instead of working 4 days per week like many adults in this town do, they’ll work a full week. Its like an automatic 20% raise!
