Sherrill Slams Trump, House Republicans Over NJ Voter Registration Probe

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill slammed President Trump and House Republicans after congressional lawmakers subpoenaed her administration over a Motor Vehicle Commission software error that improperly registered thousands of noncitizens to vote in New Jersey.

The subpoena, issued by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, seeks records related to the registration issue and the state’s handling of the error. Rep. Jeff Van Drew has also been involved in the congressional scrutiny of the issue.

The error involved the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission and led to noncitizens being improperly registered to vote. Sherrill’s administration has said it took action after discovering the problem, implemented agency-wide reforms and worked to ensure the integrity of New Jersey’s elections.

In a statement, Sherrill accused Republicans of using the subpoena for political purposes just days before the midterm elections.

“I’m focused on governing effectively. Republicans in Congress clearly aren’t,” Sherrill said.

She accused Republicans of focusing on political battles rather than election security and rising prices, and said her administration had been transparent about the registration issue and its response.
