I poured some barley into a bowl from a bag of barley that had been sealed. I bought it a few weeks ago at a local grocery store.
As soon as I added hot water to the bowl, a few dead bugs rose to the top.
Afterward, I found live bugs walking around inside the bag. I believe they may be grain weevils.
Editor’s note: This is a reader’s report about one bag. It does not establish a problem with other bags or products.
However, TLS previously reported on STAR-K’s reminder to check all barley for insects, even when the package has a hechsher.

This happens with pasta very often and I don’t think people realize. Watch the pot after you pour in the pasta. Very often there are tiny black dots that rise to the top. If you look closely there are legs and wings. You might not notice later on- especially since it might look like black pepper.
