With the colder months approaching, New Jersey households that need help with heating costs can now apply for assistance: applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is open and will be accepted through June 30, 2027.
LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps eligible households pay for home heating costs, as well as medically necessary cooling costs. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis while funding is available, so eligible residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
Who is eligible? Households that are responsible for heating or cooling costs, either directly or as part of their rent, and whose gross household income is at or below 60 percent of the State Median Income. Under this year’s guidelines, the annual income limits are $51,273 for a one person household, $67,049 for two people, $82,825 for three, $98,602 for four, $114,378 for five and $130,154 for six, with higher limits for larger households.
The benefit amount is determined by income, household size, fuel type and heating region. A single application also covers the Universal Service Fund (USF), which helps make natural gas and electric bills more affordable for eligible households.
How to apply: Residents can apply online through the state’s energy assistance portal. Ocean County residents can also get application assistance through Ocean Inc., the county’s authorized agency, at 40 Main Street in Toms River, (732) 244-5333. Statewide information is available at 1-800-510-3102.
Applicants age 60 and older, and those with a disability, may apply by mail or request a home visit from the county agency.
