Police Looking For Hit & Run Driver Who Struck, Seriously Injured 16 Year Old

Police are looking for a hit and run driver who struck and seriously injured a 16 year old girl this morning. At about 6:30 AM this morning, the girl was crossing in the crosswalk at Erica Road and New Hampshire Avenue, when she was struck by a car, Officer David Silberstien of Traffic & Safety tells TLS.

The suspect then fled the scene.

A woman traveling behind the suspect stopped her vehicle and covered the victim with a blanket until first responders arrived, Silberstien said.

The girl suffered a broken arm, a broken pelvis and suffered other injuries.

The victim was transported with EMS to Jersey Shore Medical Center where she has undergone surgery.

Silberstien, who is investigating the incident, said they have no description of the vehicle other than that it is a dark 4-door Sedan.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Silberstien at 732-363-0200, extension 5387. TLS-CCP.

  1. Hopefully the teen will have a speedy recovery.
Hit-and-runs are heinous, but it was heartwarming to read about the good samaritan who stopped and helped out.
New Hampshire Ave is only two lanes there, and the crosswalk is clearly marked with signs.
Off topic, but the new crosswalk law makes me nervous because it’s so counter-intuitive. We were always taught to watch for cars and NOT to cross if cars were seen oncoming. This new method is confusing and dangerous, and I would love to see it repealed.

  2. Thank you editors for posting this story. Hopefully someone saw something, anything, that will help the police catch this animal that would run over a helpless girl and leaving her laying in the middle of the road.

  3. TO THE DRIVER:

There are a lot of camera’s. You will be caught. Come forward and safe some face. You are the worst kind of a human for what you did.

I predict an illegal hispanic with no license/insurance/etc… Oh the joys they bring.

  4. I hope whoever was driving that car gets caught by the police and is dealt with swiftly. My prayers and thoughts are with the young girl and her family. If possible, please release the name of the girl. My daughters are 17 and went to lakewood high school and the elementary school that she would have gone to. I would like to know if it was a friend of theirs. Bless her and wishing her a speedy recovery.

  5. Mr conservative: what will happen if it turns out not to be an hispanic but a man wearing a shiny star or a man wearing a skullcap? Will you then defend the driver?

  6. To # 5, Hispanics aren’t the only people that have illegals driving without license or insurance/etc…., there are many people in lakewood and in this country weather from other nationality or religious that are driving here without licenses/insurance etc…. That’s stereo typing people and we need to be praying for this child and her family.

  7. I hope the teen has a fast recovery. This stretch of road is bad for hit and run accidents I remember about 5 years ago there was a hit and run there where the person died. They usually have a unmanned police car in the area so people drive more careful but its been there so long it has lost its effectiveness.

  8. why would any witness want to come forth
what do they get from it ?
a day or more in court of headaches and not getting paid for the loss of time from work ?
you are correct that its the right thing to do but what laws protect a witness leagaly and monatary ??

  9. to # 12. so if she is walking to school and it is necessary for her to cross the street while still dark she should have waited until the sun came out? get real! don’t blame the girl for the actions of the driver.

  10. #12, she was crossing the street in the CROSSWALK, read the story completely before commenting. she was crossing for a school bus pick up area. Also they wont put a traffic light there for the same reason they cant put one at the left turn of Salem and new hampshire where a man on motorcycle was killed a few yrs back, it is to close to the othere major light that is there, the timing would never match up with the NH and 70 and the NH and Oak lights. The traffic would be worse, and the DOT wont put them in.

  11. There are no sidewalks on the Pine Acres Side of New Hampshire Ave. May this driver who fled the scene be harassed by their own conscious. Any one who saw this should come forward. She was in the crosswalk for God’s sake.

  12. Sounds to me like this driver was driving too fast and couldn’t stop in time to avoid hitting the girl. I’m guessing this person could have been drunk and obviously irresponsible.
Nothing to do with this article but this township needs to put a traffic light by the corner of pine and martin luther king drive. I’m constantly walking by that intersection and nothing has happened with it. Maybe they’re waiting for an accident to happen? Who cares? A traffic light must be put up there. It’s a very dangerous intersection.

  13. # 14 prove it
i see all the time kids AND ADULTS WHO WALK INTO THE STREET WITHOUT LOOKING EXPECTING THE DRIVER TO MAKE SHORT STOPS ETC…

lakewood is now a city not a town anymore and ina city you need lights at every corner and sidewalks all over when is the town and state going to wake up already !

  14. please update us on this. have they caught the animal that was driving the vehicle that hit her? have there been any witnesses to come forward? how is the girl?
