The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office has added a new tool to its water safety arsenal aimed at helping rescue people in distress on the water.

On behalf of Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, the Sheriff’s Office has introduced the U SAFE remote-controlled rescue lifebuoy, a self-propelled flotation device designed to quickly reach someone who is struggling in the water.

The remotely operated device can be deployed in situations where a lifeguard is not present or when immediate physical entry into the water by a rescuer may not be possible. The U SAFE can travel out to the person in distress and provide flotation support while responders work to safely bring them to shore or to a rescue vessel.

Officials say the technology provides responders with another option during water emergencies, allowing them to get flotation assistance to a person in the water quickly while reducing the need for an immediate physical entry by the rescuer.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office says it will continue investing in new equipment and training designed to protect residents and visitors throughout Ocean County.
