Chanukah is a time for celebration, but for the families of sick children, the brightness is just not the same.
Recognizing that, Lakewood Police Chief Meyer, along with some of his officers, headed out on a mission.
Last night, geared with gift packages containing toys, chocolates and more, the team – comprised of Chief Greg Meyer, Lieutenant Bill Butterworth, Sergeant Keneth Burdge, Patrolman Alex Pedre, and Special Operations Coordinator Ben Inzelbuch, made their way around town and personally delivered surprise packages to the children and their families.
But it wasn’t just the packages. Along with each package, was a personalized letter from the Chief, and the excitement on the children’s faces, was tangible and priceless.
“I look forward to this night every year, as it is humbling to visit children who are sick and know that our visit to their homes make them feel happy for a short while,” says Chief Meyer, who sat down and spoke with the families, and even played Dreiedel with the children. “Some of the children were waiting for us, and others were completely surprised, making each visit special in its own way.”
The Chief adds, “I have made friendships with some of these kids and it’s nice to know we can make a difference. The Chief also thanked the officers who volunteered their time to join him in this special event.
Before leaving the homes, the children got a chance to hop into a police cruiser, and play with the police lights, see police gear and more.
Ben Inzelbuch, who also sponsored the gifts, said it was well worth the price.
“There’s no better feeling than seeing the faces of these children and their families light up with joy, and it was only made possibly by dedicated officers of the Lakewood Police Department,” said Inzelbuch.

Wow!! This is really beautiful to read.
What a beautiful thing to do for these families going through a very difficult time. We can all learn from our wonderful police chief and police force to show extra kindness during the holiday season. Proud to be a lakewood resident
I am in awe of Chief Meyers and his team for the kindness and generosity they have bestowed upon the community. To take the time out of their busy and very stressful jobs to bring this kind of happiness to the sick children of Lakewood beyond a holiday blessing.
Thank you once again for your kindness, nothing but kudos to the Lakewood Police Department. Bless you all!
Chief Myers and his team are the best!
Huge props to Ben Inzelbuch for sponsoring the gifts and coordinating this special operation.
WOW!! I know some of these families and personally know that this lit up their Chanukah! The Chief has a huge heart and so does his crew and Mr. Inzelbuch. Hats off to you all!!
