It’s not every day that a 9-year-old makes a donation to charity, but it’s even more touching when the child did so by collecting penny by penny.
Nicolina Saccomanno, daughter of Inspection Department Director Michael Saccommano, didn’t write her name on the paper or paper cup sitting on the desk at the Inspection Department, but instead anonymously left a note (pictured) stating that she’s holding a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia .
Day after day, and week after week, visitors dropped a penny or two into the cup, slowly filling up the cup, and cups.
About two weeks ago, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia received donation of $55, along with a note. It was from Nicolina, who said she had saved up this money to make a donation in honor of a Lakewood child who was undergoing a series of operations.
The family told TLS they were blown away by this child’s act of kindness.
“Our family was just so emotionally touched by the innocence and whole-heartedness of this child,” the father of the child told TLS.
He added, “obviously children don’t do this on their own, this comes from a special upbringing of wonderful parents.”
The hospital acknowledged the donation, and sent back the following letter to Nicolina.
“Dear Nicolina Saccomanno,
Thank you for your generosity. We have successfully processed your donation of $55.00 to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Your gift will make a difference in the lives of children fighting debilitating illnesses. It will bring hope to struggling families. And it will help unlock the science behind disease, bringing us closer to lifesaving cures.
CHOP is leading the way in pediatric care, innovative research and medical education — but we can’t do all of this without your help. Thank you!”
