PHOTOS: Five people, including two children were injured in a head-on collision this evening, police say.
The crash occurred around 8:45 PM at the intersection of River Avenue and Spruce Street, when a driver allegedly under the influence of drugs veered into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle carrying a family of four. The occupants of both vehicles were injured.
Hatzolah, Lakewood EMS, Lakewood First Aid and MONOC Paramedics responded to the scene with multiple ambulances.
Four of the injured were transported to nearby Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, and the other was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center, officials say. At least one of the injuries were reported to be serious.
Lakewood’s Traffic & Safety division, as well as CSI are investigating the crash.
River Avenue is shut in both directions between Prospect Street Street and Cedar Street for the investigation.

It was a scary sight. The guy got out of his car right away & was trying to run but ran into a poll… The driver of the other car seemed pretty bad (maybe from the air bag…). I called 911 ten seconds later, they said they got a call about it already.
Scary it could have been me! I was very close…!
that is a very bad corner and needs a light already !
When you hear about terrible accidents like this caused by a DUI, and you read about the number of arrests made for DUI, it makes you think that they should put a breathalyzer in all cars before you can start them. DUI’s are causing countless injuries and fatalities. We apparently can’t rely on person responsibility.
