VIDEO: Governor-hopeful Sen. Barbara Buono Visits Lakewood’s Tent City

VIDEO: Sebator Barbara Buono, the Democratic candidate running for New Jersey Governor, was in Lakewood today to visit the homeless encampment Tent City.

Buono visited the camp at about 1:30 p.m. and was given a tour by the camp’s founder, Steven Brigham.

The Governor-hopeful also spoke with some of the residents there, explaining to them how she would be able to help New Jersey’s residents stricken with poverty. [TLS]

  1. Basically, her plan to help the homeless is to take money from the workers, and pay the non-working.

Who are the workers who are going to be taxed? The people like you and me who work 10 or 12 hours a day and still don’t amke enough to feed our families. Of course, the public sector unions won’t be taxed extra, because they will simply riot and make a ruckus (figuratively speaking, of course) like when Christie tried to make them pay a small percentage of their healthcare costs and they went ballistic.

Do you know that there in 35 states, welfare beneficiaries now get more than minimum wage workers? That means that you get more from the government when not working, than you would get from an employer if you worked at a minimum wage job. Pathetic! Why should anyone work anymore? Just vote Democrat and get some more goodies from the workers/losers! Again, pathetic!

This story made it to Drudge, so now Lakewood is national news!

  2. Tent city went up when the Dems had a governor here ! His name was Corzine & no one was helped! Sen. Brono is head on the senate for years & she didn’t seem to help tent city all along ,so what happened now? This has nothig to do with Cristi

  3. My favorite part is the guy with the flipped collar who is either released from an institution or totally toked out, and he won’t stop hogging the middle. Priceless video! nice goin’, TLS!

  4. its hysterical how democrats pretend to care about the poor, and then they go and create system that punishes people for working ‘the more you work, the less you get from the state & the more the state takes from you’. (thus forcing poor people to stay poor)

  5. Sure. Don’t visit those that have been accepted by this monstrosity in this town! She just lost most of Lakewood’s vote! Nice photo op but stupid move.

  6. How about she give the poor HER money and NOT our money. If she is elected she will turn this into a welfare state. How many more time do we have to elect these Liberal Democrats to tax us.

    Stop the madness! Vote Republican!

  7. Steve if you were to cooperate with Lakewood, maybe everyone here in Tent City will be in a better place. Maybe instead of fighting Lakewood work together with them, help them place us!!

We all know that we need to be in a better place, I will nnot be able to last another winter in the freezing cold!!!

  8. She makes it clear for us. If helping the tent city residents is your priority then vote for her. If helping the working middle class who pay the taxes to run government is your priority then dont vote for her.

  9. So to all of you who are exclaiming they don’t want the government to help tent city, what do you believe should be done? Should these HUMAN BEINGS be left outside like animals the rest of their lives? Or is it our responsibilitie as a society with morals and compassion (supposedly) to take action and help those in need. Many of these tent city residents are sick people who nebuch wouldn’t even be able to find work.

Furthermore, despite the republican disgust for taxation, homeless shelters are a necessary establishment in any city/town/county. You wouldn’t let your neighbors sleep outside in a tent or go hungry so don’t inflict that same fate on others. The lack of tact is really disheartening and makes me wonder how frum people could really care so little about other people’s well being.

  10. I applaud anyone who gives of themselves to help the poor. Like anything else, the giving should be done the proper way.

Tent City residents have fought against going to shelters, getting themselves help, be it psychological or medical, or any other help. It is unfortunate that the powers that be have used these unfortunates for political gain. They come to Tent City and feel for the residents, which is great, but never offer them practical solutions. Instead, they add fuel to the fire.

Shame on Buono for grandstanding. If you want my vote, discuss practical ideas to alleviate and bad situation. To Ms. Buono, if I wanted to see amatuer showboating, I would go to Atlantic City, not Tent City.

  11. Not a very smart move. She may have gotten some votes from some tent city people but she lost a lot of votes from the whole city of Lakewood. So if I were her I’d fire my campaign manager.

  12. Brigham loves using Tent City as a way to get donations and publicity. I dont thik he cares about the resients or else he would not have turned down the offer of motel housing for them. As usual the residents of TC are caught in the middle .
