Numerous campaign signs for Jackson’s Republican ticket have been defaced with Israeli flag stickers in recent days, TLS has learned, an act people connected to the campaign decry as clearly antisemitic as the township’s contentious election race enters its final stretch.
Dozens of signs for Mayor Jennifer Kuhn and Township Council candidates Brian McCarron and John “Pojo” Pejoski – including along Bowman Road and Grand Boulevard – have been hit with the stickers, according to reports received by TLS. A photograph of one of the vandalized signs shows an Israeli flag sticker affixed beside Kuhn’s name.
“Hundreds of this ticket’s signs have been ripped down throughout Jackson in the past couple weeks,” a person connected to the campaign told TLS. “This is definitely more alarming and disturbing, as it is clearly meant in an antisemitic way. This is a local election – it has nothing to do with Israel.”
The defacement comes as the race for Jackson’s mayoral and Township Council seats intensifies ahead of the November 3 election. Kuhn, who was appointed mayor last October following the resignation of longtime Mayor Michael Reina, is seeking a full term alongside running mates McCarron, a Board of Education member, and Pejoski, a retired Jackson police officer. They face the Fight For Jackson slate of mayoral candidate Elliott Shem-Tov with Councilman Christopher Pollak and Amanda Trombetta, and the Jackson United ticket of Brandon Rose, Paul Sarti and Casey Jackson.
