PHOTO: BJ’s Wholesale Club Adds Covers to Magazines for More Family-friendly Experience

mag bjs clubIn an effort to accommodate a more family-friendly experience, and in response to requests, the new BJ’s Wholesale Club on Route 9 has added covers to the magazines at the checkout counters, the Club confirmed to TLS.

The Club took the initiative and completed the enhancement shortly after the grand opening of the new store, to accommodate the many families inadvertently exposed to the sometimes-provocative magazines prominently displayed at the counters.

A similar move was made by Shoprite last year.

The nearly 88,000 square-foot club is located at the intersection of Route 9 and Lanes Mill Road.

  1. I happened to have noticed it when i was there. I told the cashier that we really appreciate that they went out of the way to accommodate the Orthodox community and that she should please share our gratitude with the management. A compliment goes a long way.

Apparently you don’t understand. We’re not worried if someone buys the magazines. That’s their business. We’re worried about people being exposed to the covers which always have provocative pictures on them when they’re not interested.

  3. If people are so busy and afraid they might see some magazines, then they shouldn’t be there in the first place… The first thing you see when you walk in is like 50 TVs but yet they make a fuss about magazines??

  4. Somebody should write a letter to target asking them if they can cover the magazines. Especially because the Brick and Howell targets have a large number of Frum customers.

  5. If we can all speek to the manager who has been open for ideas, 1] to be sure that ALL the magazines are covered, 2] the large video screens show decent and not offensive content only, 3] the bj radio airing music that it does be changed to voice free classical music, 4] more products with certifications accepted by the commmunity be added. Call and ask for Scott, he is a great guy, looking to satisfy all!

about target the issue is not just the magazines, the whole store is not up to decent standards, and should be corrected, for everyones sake.

  7. Attn: #13 – Lakewooder, are you saying bj’s isn’t up to decent standards or are you talking about target? I think target is a great store and always have a pleasant experience there other than the issue of the magazines.

  8. #14; target is painted with “magazines”, if they want our buisness they should accomadate.
I wonder who this site is for whith the ratings of #12 & #13?
Have we lost our sensitivity? Hope not!

  9. Everyone should thank & encourage Shoprite, CVS, Bj’s, and all thoose who are doing something, and tell them it is good for buisness & PR, to do more our/their behalf. That there be harmony & respect for their shoppers, and dignity, as every high class entity gives.
The better option would be to have KRM or Moishes from Brooklyn, come to Lakewood and slash the high food prices being payed by Kollel, Rabei’im, & Large families.

  10. #15 ; True point, for those who shopping is entertainment – malls etc.., but we are talking aboult bread & butter shopping.
Yes I am waiting for Moshiach, when we won’t be imersed in such mundane issues!

  11. You need to set up your own stores that meet your requirements. Don’t start dictating what stores have been doing for years. If a store offends you don’t shop there. I have stores I don’t frequent (not for your reasons but for other reasons). It’s not illegal to sell magazines. Also that comment about dress code is totally out of line. The store dictates the dress code – not the customers.

  12. BJ’s and all other stores should put the magazines in another place, away from the front lanes where everyone has to go to buy, including all children. Then no one is offended and if you want magazines, you go to them, not forced on everyone. Be nice and reasonable to accommodate everyone. This is not just “your” store, this is everyone’s store.
