An Eye Witness

I was across the street and I saw the whole thing. The driver who hit the pedestrian was making a right turn on red and not looking to see that a person was crossing the street right in front of him and he kept pushing her with his car so she (the victim) had to walk backwards until she fell down. I honked at the driver and he finally stopped and got out of his car and looked at the victim to see what happened.

why don’t you give the name. Maybe someone can help the person if we knew their name???????

My Take

Drivers think they have the exclusive right to turn on red, and don’t realize that pedestrians have right of way and before turning on a red light you have to make sure there is nothing coming in your way, whether a person or another vehicle. I was once crossing Madison Ave. at 13th St with a few other people and a driver made a right turn on red right into the way of the people crossing. B”H no one was hit.

I came right after the accident- Hatzalah was there is about 45 seconds- it took the police around 4-5 minutes to get there. when i left (about 5 minutes later) Local EMS was not there yet.
Everyone in Lakewood, when you see an ambulance or Hatzalah volunteer, move over for them– They need to get there soon.

I can fix anything. With a stop sign

Did you really see the whole thing or you just trying to cover up for the driver
How can someone just fall and get head injury instead of recomforting the victim as you describe. You say things like. It’s his or her fault. It’s really Amazing.

Here is the official section regarding turning right on red in NJ:

Right Turn on Red

Unless a No Turn on Red sign is posted, New Jersey law authorizes a right turn on
a red light after a motorist comes to a full stop and checks for traffic. A motorist
must yield to all oncoming traffic and pedestrians before turning right at a red light.
Difficult-to-see vehicles, such as bicycles and mopeds, may have a green light, so
it is important for a motorist to be aware of their presence. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-115)
Always use a proper turn signal at least 100 feet before making any turn, and
cancel the signal after completing the turn. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-126)

Notice the part about “coming to a complete stop” – essentially, it needs to be treated like a stop sign. Speeding around a corner on a red is breaking the law. You also risk hitting motorists who have the right of way. PLEASE come to a complete stop on red, make sure you have clearance and then make your turn.

and while your at it #7, pedestrians should NOT cross against a light either, I have seen way to many people do that, if your at a cross walk your supposed to wait for the sign to change to walk.
