Pedestrian killed in Lakewood accident identified

Police this morning have released the name of the pedestrian killed in yesterday’s accident on Madison Avenue.

As earlier reported, at approximately 5:30 pm, Officers responded to an accident in the area of Madison Avenue near Sixth Street.

Upon arrival, Officers observed that a 2017 Hyundai had struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian, identified as Sofia Biernacka, age 76 of Lakewood, sustained life-threatening injuries. She was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus.  Unfortunately, life saving measures were not effective and she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

The driver of the Hyundai, Victor Indiero, age 63 of Freehold, was questioned as to his involvement in the crash and released pending further investigation.

Further investigation by the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, along with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that the Hyundai struck Biernacka while traveling south on Madison Avenue.

“Excessive speed does not appear to play a factor in the crash,” Detective Lieutenant Leroy Marshall said.

Mr. Indiero’s vehicle was impounded pending further investigation.

Madison Avenue was closed for approximately four hours for the investigation. Members from the Department of Transportation responded to set up a detour around the crash scene.  The NJSP and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit also assisted with the investigation.
