Parents seeking driver who knocked their son off his bike

Hi, TLS, My 12-year-old son was riding his bike today on a Rt. 9 sidewalk northbound. While crossing Sherwood Ave (right across from Kimball), a car backed up and hit him and knocked him off his bike.

The driver got out of his car and asked if he was ok, my son said yes. The driver then drove away.

My son biked a bit further and realized he wasn’t ok, his arm was gushing and he was in excruciating pain in his hand.

He borrowed somebody’s phone and called my wife.

B”h, it’s nothing too serious, but he did break his arm, and cut his elbow pretty bad, and there will be medical bills, so I would like to get hold of the person so we can bill his car insurance.

If you were involved in or witnessed an incident at around 5:00 Thursday afternoon, Rt 9 and Sherwood Drive across from Kimball Medical Center, where a car backed up and knocked a boy off his bike, please contact me at 908-839-8933.

There is no blame over here for leaving, as the boy originally indicated he was ok.

Thanks.

    • Thats not how it works my 13 year old son was hit by a car and my auto insurance covered it, your son doesnt need to be on the policy. money aside it doesnt matter that your son said hes ok the driver was not allowed to leave, he is looking at prison time

  1. My son was once hit by a car. (Baruch hashem, after several thousand dollars worth of tests, he was deemed perfectly fine.) It was no fault. My car insurance paid the bill, and my health insurance paid the car insurance deductible. I don’t understand what my car insurance had to do with the story, but apparently that’s the law in New Jersey.
I don’t know if this story is no fault or not. If it was the driver’s fault, I would expect that his insurance would pay.

  2. No fault only pays for medical bills related to vehicles. The 12 year old was on a bike! Read the story. Since he doesn’t have no fault he needs reimbursement from the car that hit him!

    • No fault covers medical bills related to vehicles. This injury was due to an injury caused by a vehicle. It does not matter if he is a minor or not. This should be covered.

  3. Regular insurance or Medicaid (whatever insurance the parent has) won’t pay for it? It doesn’t make sense that not. Let’s say they don’t find out who’s the driver that hit him. I wonder if insurance is allowed to leave someone in this situation w/o treatment. after all, he was on a bike.
I’m just wondering. I don’t live in lakewood so i don’t know how insurance works in New Jersey.

    • If they don’t have medicaid, they probably have a very high deductible. If this happened to my child chas vshalom, I’d have to pay at least $1000 for treatment (and trust me we have insurance).

  4. NJ PIP law covers all members of the household, injured in a car accident as a driver, cyclist, or pedestrian. So you are specifically covered.

  5. Why don’t you just call the insurance company and find out? Your son doesn’t remember which area he was in? It’s not so difficult to find out just go to that area and knock on every door

  6. CVS and/or Kimball may have video surveillance recordings. You can always ask. Additionally, a quick scout of the area may show cameras at other locations as well. Didn’t LPD just start a new register your camera program? Maybe try them. Hamukom ymaleh chesroncha and refuah sheleima!

    • I have asked, its not mesira in cases where someone posses a danger to the public. while this case can be an innocent mistake its the actions after the fact that show that he/she is reckless

  7. I’ve been struck numerous times by both kids and adults riding behind me on the.SIDEWALK……you can’t hear them coming!!
Get a horn, he’ll or buzzer!!!

    • Moma,
The child is a 12 1//2 year old boy, he is mature, safe and very responsible.
He does NOT ride on the road, only on sidewalks.
This incident happened when he was crossing a side street.

You should be dan lekaf zechus before blaming the parents.

Btw, I don’t plan on letting him bike to school anymore, because unfortunately, there indeed are too many reckless and irresponsible drivers in Lakewood.
