Over 25 Vehicles Burglarized in 2 Week Span; Nearly Half Had Windows Busted

At least 26 vehicles were burglarized in Lakewood in the past two weeks, with about 10 of the burglaries involving busted windows, Detective Sergeant Greg Staffordsmith tells TLS.

The burglary numbers are gathered from reports between August 7-August 22, says Staffordsmith.

Stolen from the vehicles, were mainly GPS devices.

The burglaries occurred in the areas of Aspen Court, Capital Lane, Dewey Avenue, Ridge Avenue, 7th Street, New York Avenue, Ocean Avenue, Henry Street, First Street, Vintage Circle, Spruce Street, Ashley Avenue, Holly Street, Oberlin Avenue, East 5th, Woehr Avenue and others. It’s unknown if the incidents are connected.

“Please remind your readers to please be sure and lock their vehicles,” says Staffordsmith. “Many times, a suspect is looking for an easy opportunity. If your vehicle or house is secured and safeguarded, there is a good chance they will move on to one that is not.” Staffordsmith added, “Although in these particular cases forced entry was used, the practice of securing your vehicles and home is encouraged.”

Captain Meyer added that residents are encouraged to remove their valuables from vehicles, including GPS devices, phones, laptops, wallets and other valuables. [TLS]

and you have to remind people to do this???? I guess you do !!!!

  2. if you leave your GPS, laptop etc. visible than you may as well leave your door unlocked, so as to save yourself the extra expense of a broken window. the 1st advise that he should’ve given was NOT leave all of these devices in your car, that would eliminate most problems.

  3. the unlocked door and window has been the lpd’s way out of cracking down on burglary. here 1/2 the cases involved FORCED entry. thank s mr e Stafford smith. but I think the popular reminders are not what’s needed in this case. what we need is for the lpd to pledge to find and capture these thieves. come on…20 hits! at least a few have to be on security cameras! get a face and you will have someone to go after

  4. Stupid to lock your doors. Obviously they’re breaking windows so better to leave em unlocked. Let them open the door and take whatever they want. The only thing you can do is empty your car of valuables. (or catch this guy)

thieves are like dogs. they always sniff for “treats”. dont leave any treats for the thieves to see/sniff out!!!

  6. As residents of a town in 2013 we need to wake up. If OUR tax money pays for a police dept. That can only advise us, on how to avoid getting burglarized. ITS TIME FOR AN LPD SHAKE UP. Ye ye ye they are all such nice guys. But wake up guys. Car crime is a first step to a town becoming a free for all. I had several car brake ins over the last few years. The last one was so brazen that its obvios that the thieves no that LPD cannot enforce law and order here. Us residence DO NOT have to accept getting robbed and violated as a way of life.

  7. Please note there have been numerous stories of hoodlums harassing 8-13 year olds on Ridge avenue in the past 2 weeks. In addition many bike shave been stolen in a very short period of time. Unfortunately there is not much the police can do. BUT please make the police reports and ask for a Case #. otherwise it all goes unreported.
