Beginning on Wednesday, April 24th, the Outerbridge Crossing will no longer accept cash as payment for tolls. An overhead gantry will read drivers EZ-Pass tags or license plate and bill them.
Those in possession of a Port Authority-issued EZ-Pass tag will pay $12.50 for crossing at peak hours, and $10.50 for off-peak hours crossings, and if you have a New Jersey Turnpike Authority EZ-Pass you will be billed $15. Those without an EZ-Pass will be billed by mail. With cashless tolling beginning, carpool discounts will be discontinued, a major disadvantage to many Lakewood families.
The eastbound lanes of the Outerbridge will be closed Monday and Tuesday nights, beginning at 10 PM, to prepare for the transition. The westbound lanes will not be affected during the closures. Drivers can expect to be detoured to the Goethals or Bayonne bridges as workers prepare the bridge for the transition.
Removing cash payments from the bridge will allow drivers to maintain highway speed, saving motorists some 200,000 travel hours each year, as well as provide an environmental benefit by reducing emissions from idling cars, according to the Port Authority. Officials also believe going cashless will reduce accidents in the area by 7 to 10 percent.
If you have a NJ tag, how do you get it the port authority one to get the lower rate?
Is it only for NY residents?
