Opinion: I Voted For Trump. After Today’s Israel Aid Announcement, I Regret It.

I voted for President Trump. After hearing what he said about aid to Israel on Election Day morning, I regret it.

Today, November 3, Trump said in a television interview that the United States would stop providing Israel roughly $4 billion in annual assistance at the end of this year.

“We were giving them $4 billion – we are – but it gets cut off at the end of the year,” he said. He said Prime Minister Netanyahu had proposed ending the aid and that Israel could still buy American weapons.

I understand that Israel may want to become less dependent on American assistance. There is nothing wrong with discussing that goal. Trump says Netanyahu brought it up. That matters, and it deserves to be acknowledged.

But the details matter too. The existing security-assistance agreement provides about $3.8 billion annually through 2028. The timing and terms of any change have not been laid out. Announcing a cutoff is not the same thing as explaining how it will work.

And why make this announcement on the morning of the midterms, while talking about a Senate race?

If this is about pandering to win votes, then he is just like every other politician. That is exactly the kind of politics I thought I was voting against.

I did not expect to agree with every decision Trump made. Voting for someone does not mean giving him a blank check. It certainly does not mean staying quiet when something he says leaves you feeling that your trust was misplaced.

I want a clear explanation of what was agreed, what is changing, and why it is being announced this way. I want Israel’s security treated as a serious issue, not as an inconvenience in a campaign argument.

Perhaps there is more to this agreement than we have heard. If so, explain it. But do not ask those of us who supported you to pretend the timing and the political language do not matter.

I voted for Trump because I expected something different. If an ally’s security is now another talking point to adjust for the midterms, I regret that vote.

A Trump voter

I was a big fan of trump, I’m so angry what he did that I literally want that the democrats should take over the house and senate.

The tafrrifs was the biggest thing for me.

Everything went up in price because of the tafrrifs.

The gas prices went up.

I lost my cleaning lady because of ICE damage…

And now he is cutting aid to Israel.

I never thought I’ll say that but he lost my vote by far.

I know he did sometimes good things for the jews, but I feel it in my pocket big time,he went too far.

I too voted for Trump and regret my vote. He promised lower groceries but they are more expensive now. He promised better and cheaper healthcare and my insurance costs have gone up hundreds of dollars a month. He promised lower gas prices and it’s been higher on average for the last year than the spike under Biden. He promised to deport all illegals but has just gone and violated American citizens rights. He promised to get rid of fraud and corruption but has merely sold pardons to fraudsters and left the American tax payer holding the bag. I know the rest of the comments are going to play the what if game and try to say that “Harris would have been worse” and even if that was the case, we were sold a false bill of goods by Trump. He is getting billions of dollars richer and telling us that “affordability is a made up word”. We were all suckers in 2024 and paying the price.

Relax. He’s good. One comment about discontinuing aid that Netanyahu brought up should not ruffle anyone’s boat regardless of why he brought it up now. I don’t demand perfection. I demand someone who is really nice to the Jews and however way you slice it, no one in recent memory has been even remotely as nice to them as him. Ask yourself honestly

Wait a bit before you pounce.

Politicians say things to win elections. They NEED to.

Judge him by what he DOES, not by what he SAYS.

PS. Who do you plan to vote for that is better??

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I have some breaking news: Israel is wildly unpopular in the US.

The radical left has been anti Israel for a while. More recently the moderate dems have gotten on board. More recently so, a lot of the right has soured on Israel as well to the point that a majority of Republicans under 50 have a negative view of Israel. That’s not under 30, but under 50.

So besides for boomer Republicans, Israel as a whole is pretty unpopular.

One of the biggest talking points on the left and the right has been the financial aid that Israel has been getting. Whether you feel that criticism is valid or not is not relevant.

Taking that talking point away deflates a lot of the anti-Israel rhetoric, and actually helps Israel to rehabilitate it’s image.

Also, this was Israel’s idea! Netanyahu has been talking about this for years, and has been bringing it up more seriously as of late as Trump said.

Honestly, this is probably the best thing that could have happened for the broader US-Israel relationship once you consider what comes after Trump.

Look, you can huff and puff and take your ball and go home, ultimately ceding control of the US government to forces who are much more virulently anti-Israel, or you can face the fact that politics is the art of the possible, the attainable, the second best, and vote for the politicians and the party that align with our interests and our values 97% of the time.

Your choice. Get out and vote.

YOU want a clear explanation. Excuse me but who are you? It says clearly in the article and on other reports that this was suggested by Netanyahu and agreed to several months ago so don’t read it as a slap in the face from Trump. Maybe the timing of the announcement was ill timed and maybe it was for political reasons, certainly the general public will never know that. Please don’t make this out to be something it is not.

Lev Melachim V’sarim B’yad Hashem. Let’s remember that even if you don’t look at it with “frum hashkafic lenses” Trump is only i office for another 2 years.
I was actually happy to read this (especially if it was Netanyahu’s idea!) as it will pressur eth Israeli’s to come up with their own defenses and rely less on the American aid.
