UPDATE – Thursday: The Manchester Township Police Department today released details of the overturned crash that occurred Wednesday evening in the township.
At approximately 5:45 PM, officers responded to the area of Ocean County Route 539 and New Mexico Drive for a report of an overturned single-vehicle crash, police said.
Upon arrival, officers observed a black 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross lying on its side. The initial investigation revealed that the Mitsubishi was traveling southbound on Route 539 when the driver departed the roadway to the right, struck a utility pole and a wooden fence, and overturned, police said.
The collision caused heavy damage to the vehicle and resulted in the entrapment of the driver, identified as 73-year-old Cathy Stone of Whiting, police said. Following extrication, Stone reported numerous non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center via Medevac helicopter. Stone was wearing her seatbelt during the impact, and she is currently listed in stable condition.
Assisting at the scene were Manchester Township Emergency Medical Services, paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the Whiting Fire Company, the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Fire Department, the Forked River Fire Department, and Accurate Towing.
Failure to maintain lane is believed to be the primary contributing factor to the crash, police said. The crash remains under investigation by Patrolman Keith Douglas and Patrolman Brenden Brush of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
