As reported around midnight last night, fire service units were battling a large forest fire in Fort Dix, a fire officials say has now been contained.
“Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst firefighters have contained a 2,000-acre active fire along the Fort Dix range area here today,” the Base said.
The fire began at Range 29A at approximately 8 a.m. June 14 and spread to surrounding ranges. A separate range fire began on June 11 at Range 59C, burning about 390 acres, which has since been extinguished.
Residents reported a strong smell of smoke in Lakewood last night, which police say was due to this fire.
There are no reported injuries, structural damage or threats to private residences or property, according to JB MDL Fire and Emergency Services officials.
In total, approximately 2,400 acres have burned. The cause of the fires was due to routine range training.
