Officer Wilson In Stable Condition, Lt Meyer Doing Well

IMG_7319_wmThe police officer most seriously wounded by gunfire during a raid on a township home remains hospitalized today, officials said. Patrolman Jonathan Wilson is in stable condition at University Hospital in Newark, a spokeswoman said. Wilson was shot in the face and may lose vision in one eye, authorities said Thursday. Meanwhile, Lt. Gregory Meyer, who police say was shot in the foot during the raid, is in fair condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, and is doing very well, a spokesman there said.

The defendant, Jaime Gonzalez, 39, remains in critical condition at the Neptune hospital, according to the spokesman.

Local, county, state and federal authorities went to the Mackenzie Court house early Thursday morning for what was supposed to be the culmination of a year-long investigation into gun and drug trafficking, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford.

But when they entered the house, they were fired upon by Gonzalez, authorities said.

Two other officers, Patrolman Leonard Nieves Sr. and Sgt. Louis Sasso, were also hit by the bullets from the stolen .357 Magnum, but their bulletproof vests saved them from serious injuries, authorities said.

Police returned fire, and Gonzalez sustained multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

He has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and receiving stolen property. APP
