State Police Sergeant Sean Boag delivered a baby girl on the side of northbound express lanes of the Garden State Parkway while on his way home from work on Friday.
The expecting Lakewood couple were on their way to a hospital in New Brunswick when the baby decided she would not wait any longer. The husband pulled his Toyota Camry off to the side of the road and called 911 for assistance.
At 3:58 p.m., Sergeant Boag arrived at the scene after hearing a dispatcher’s transmission requesting a trooper’s at milepost 110. Since he was close to where they were stopped, he was able to arrive within minutes of the initial call.
At 4:02 p.m., the expecting mother delivered a healthy baby girl with Sergeant Boag’s assistance. Mom and baby were transported to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank where they were last reported as doing well. Sergeant Boag was commended for his quick response and decisive actions, which helped keep everyone safe.

Mazes tov.
Wonderful. Beautiful. But this will keep happening unless we actually get a hospital in this town. What a disgrace.
everyone’s nightmare!! B”H all’s well. Mazel tov!
Very nice
@A-it is mind boggling, we have such a huge birth rate with no intown facility.
Ummmm… Last time I checked there is a hospital in Lakewood.
Confused,
If you are referring to Monmouth South (Kimball), there is no maternity ward. Has been shut down for quite a while already.
I had my baby in a hospital in Lakewood. And if you don’t like Kimball, there are hospitals in Brick, Toms River, Freehold, Neptune, Red Bank and I’m sure I’m forgetting several others. There’s no reason to be driving to New Brunswick other than personal choice.
mazal Tov!
@Seriously
Perhaps in the past you had a baby in Lakewood, it is no longer possible to do so as Monmouth Medical Center South (Kimball) no longer has any maternity services.
Additionally often it is not personal choice to go further but due to the mother’s condition/risks and/or the baby’s.
Please don’t pass judgement on things you obviously have never had to deal with B”H.
I had all of my 6 children in Brick hospital. It’s not even 10 min away from most points in Lakewood and even closer to any Rt.88 neighborhood . The service was good , the doctors are good… I personally had very good experience, even when some thing didn’t go so smothly. Since one of my kids were born with in 30 min. I wouldn’t travel to far…
In response to jbw, RWJ in Brunswick is a more advanced maternal fetal medical facility than the centers you mention. Mothers facing unique congenital or pre existing complications have no choice but to travel to farther hospitals. In fact obgyns at closer facilities are required to send these cases to more adequate professionals.
If members of the community supported the OB services of their local hospital (Kimball), the maternity ward would still be open today.
