Oak Street At Albert Avenue To Open Next Week

oak street albert avenueVIDEO of utility crews working at the intersection of Oak Street and Albert Avenue this morning, in what are the finishing touches to open Oak Street to drive-through traffic, for the first time. Oak Street – which until now was a dead-end road – will soon allow motorists to drive from River Avenue until New Hamsphire Avenue, crossing over Albert Avenue.

There will be two stop signs along the way though, one at Albert Avenue Street, and the other at Vine Street.

  1. enough people complained about the round-about (traffic circle) that they won’t put that in, but it will need a traffic light because people are going to go flying down the roads and there will be some very serious MVA’s.

  2. Oak Street was not made a through street to protect the kids that go to Oak St School. I guess the safety of these public school children are not a big priority anymore.

  3. As a resident who lives in this neighborhood, I sincerely hope and pray this does not cause any pedestrian fatalities. Although I understand the benefits of having this segment open for easier access to the hospital from Rt. 70, there are some issues I wish would have been addressed prior to its opening. For those unfamiliar with the area, the old section of Oak St. does not have sidewalks. There are many children just hanging around on their bikes, playing in the street, people walking with their dogs, and now many from the Orthodox community walking on Friday night/Saturday, including the adorable young children from the other end of my street. Often, cars turn off of Pine St. onto Albert Ave. and proceed at a speed that far exceeds the limit of 35mph. They often turn onto Oak St. (25mph) to go out to New Hampshire Ave. and vice versa. I’m concerned because traffic coming out of the industrial park will go through a neighborhood, rather than using roadways built for higher density (New Hampshire and Pine). The other side of Oak St. also contains many schools. Besides the industrial park traffic there will be school bus traffic at or close to the same time as each other in the afternoons. I would venture to say that traffic lights will be needed in the future.

  4. This will be a great appreciation for our firefighters that have to come from the east side of town and used to have to drive down to pine st and then across..will save a lot of time on responding to emergencies off the route 9 corridor

  5. that oak street extension is long overdue. it was started way back in 1970 with the widening of oak between new hampshire and albert, then they(the township)stopped and planned on continuing when the oak street school was finished.when the town abandoned lafayette that created a huge traffic problem in that section of town, so all i have to say to the town is “IT`S ABOUT TIME”
