Last night, a thief broke into a North Miami Beach Hatzalah member’s vehicle parked near his home, and walked off with his Hatzalah medical backpack containing thousands of dollars of lifesaving equipment, the North Miami Beach Hatzalah founder Zalmy Cohen, formerly from Lakewood, tells TLS.
“The thief likely was surprised by what was inside and quite possibly discarded the backpack and equipment since he may not have a source to whom to sell it,” says Cohen. Indeed, the last time a Hatzalah backpack was taken from a car, a neighbor found it in a nearby dumpster.
A police report was filed, says Cohen, though until it’s found – if they do, Hatzalah will need to dish out thousands of dollars to purchase new equipment.

Some hatzolah divisions carry insurance policies that cover theft or damage to equipment that is in a pov of a member. Please email me at [email protected] for further details. I believe all hatzolah divisions should be carrying such a policy.
